The live-action reimagining of “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” has finally gotten a significant update, moving from a film format to a Netflix series. According to Deadline, the series will be produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, in partnership with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, both under the umbrella of Warner Bros. Television.
The adaptation has been in the works since 2016, originally as a film venture by Paramount Pictures with Glen Powell and Jono Matt co-writing. While Powell is no longer part of the project, Matt continues as a producer. Tara Hernandez, co-creator of “Mrs. Davis,” will be the writer for the series.
“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” initially aired as an animated show from 1990 to 1996, recognized for its ecological messages and direct appeals to the audience regarding issues such as pollution. The narrative follows a group of young individuals selected by Gaia, who transform into the Planeteers. Each one is granted an elemental ring—Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, and Heart—to fight against Eco-Villains. Collectively, they summon Captain Planet, a superhero endowed with various abilities.
The franchise has experienced multiple adaptations, including video games and comics. The most recent is a comic series by Dynamite Entertainment, which debuted on May 7, 2025, providing a new take on the original narrative.
Currently, there has been no release date announced for Netflix’s “Captain Planet” series.
