\nAmazon has released UK studio Maverick Games from their publishing deal concerning a story-led open-world driving game. Founded in 2022 by former Playground Games developers, including Mike Brown, the studio is now seeking a new publishing partner, although they have indicated ongoing discussions with potential collaborators.<\/p>\n

The separation was first reported by The Game Business, highlighting Amazon’s shift in focus toward the Tomb Raider franchise and its Luna streaming service. This strategic change has resulted in layoffs within Amazon’s gaming division and the closure of projects such as the MMO New World and the platformer King of Meat.<\/p>\n

An Amazon spokesperson expressed respect for Maverick Games and noted that the decision allows the studio the flexibility to find a partner better aligned with their goals. They acknowledged past achievements during their collaboration.<\/p>\n

Maverick co-founder Brown, along with studio head Harinder Sangha, assured that development on the game continues to meet expectations, with hopes to share more information later this year. They aim to create a unique game by infusing story-driven elements into the racing genre, a field often lacking in depth. Jamie Brittain, co-creator of the teen drama Skins, has been brought on as the lead writer to help achieve this vision. The aim is to develop flawed, relatable characters to foster a “human connection” often absent in typical racing games.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, there is optimism surrounding Maverick’s quest for a new publisher and the game\u2019s potential to stand out in a crowded market characterized by mixed results for story-oriented racing titles.
