Set against the backdrop of the first season of the acclaimed TV show, the game presents an opportunity to explore the universe of *The Expanse* while interacting with its trademark themes of class division and intrigue within a colonized solar system.

#### Setting and Gameplay Mechanics

In this third-person RPG, players explore a wheel-shaped mercenary spacebase called Pinkwater, located near Jupiter. The environment reflects the ‘hard sci-fi’ aesthetic of the TV series, featuring artificial gravity and intricate details like scuffed helmets and fizzy holoscreens. The gameplay involves encountering combat scenarios where players utilize cover and shooting mechanics to navigate through various challenges, including a hit squad from Protogen.

Unique elements, such as a treasure room that requires players to scale through machinery in mag boots, offer a touch of exploration amid mostly linear gameplay. Although there are opportunities to experience world-building, such as interacting with terminals and discovering secrets, the overall quest structure feels somewhat traditional.

#### Characterization and Dialogue

Unfortunately, the characters in *Osiris Reborn* might disappoint fans hoping for depth akin to those seen in the series. Characters feel somewhat flat and lack the gravitas exuded by notable figures from the show. While diverse backgrounds are available for players to choose from, the dialogue often comes off as clichéd and lacking in personality. This ultimately undermines player engagement, as NPC interactions rarely foster a sense of urgency or significance.

Facial capture technology exists, lending a level of fidelity to character interactions, but it can come across as disjointed, which distracts from immersion. The protagonist’s dialogues tend to be facile, feeling disconnected from the rich narrative possibilities the game’s universe provides.

#### Combat and Skill Systems

Combat mechanics encompass a mix of traditional shooting and character skills, but fall short of innovating the genre. Enemies adhere closely to predictable archetypes, reducing the challenge presented to the player. While there are destructible environments and some dynamic elements thanks to the artificial gravity, combat lacks unique flair or standout moments.

The skill progression includes four combat skill trees, alongside exploration paths and customizable traits. This hints at potential depth but may leave players wanting more complex and engaging mechanics reminiscent of Owlcat’s previous projects, like *Rogue Trader*.

#### Conclusion: A Cautious Outlook

While *The Expanse: Osiris Reborn* offers a glimpse into a beloved universe, its beta version evokes mixed feelings. The game’s execution appears tentative, lacking the vibrancy necessary to stand alongside the source material. Players eager to delve into the *Expanse* universe may want to hold off on pre-ordering, opting instead to watch the title’s development from a distance until more substantial improvements are made. In its current state, the game resembles a mildly intriguing asteroid colony—worth monitoring but not yet ready to land on.

It’s early days for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, but I can say confidently after an hour with a beta version that I don’t want to have sex with anybody in it. The TV show (I’ve not read the books – bite me, beltalowda) has a terrific cast of seasoned character actors portraying cheesy, hard-wearing oddballs from all around a colonised, fiercely class-divided solar system.
