The updated version of the acclaimed pirate game promises several tweaks and enhancements while maintaining the essence of the original, also featuring the iconic assassinations we’ve come to expect from the series.

## Notable Changes and Absences

One of the most surprising aspects of Black Flag Resynced is the omission of the ***Freedom Cry*** DLC. This additional adventure featuring Adéwalé, Edward Kenway’s former slave quartermaster, became a standalone game in 2014 and is recognized as one of the most impactful expansions in the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft’s creative director, **Paul Fu**, emphasized the focus on Edward Kenway’s narrative in the Caribbean, leading to the exclusion of multiplayer and DLCs. This decision sparked disappointment among fans who cherished Freedom Cry’s powerful story.

Ubisoft has affirmed that the original Black Flag will still be available for purchase, meaning players can still access Freedom Cry independently. However, this absence of beloved content in a remake raises eyebrows, as remasters typically integrate additional expansions.

## A Shift in Narrative Focus

The decision to exclude Freedom Cry may stem from a desire to present a more palatable interpretation of the Caribbean’s history. As Jean Guesdon, head of content, mentioned in the presentation, the remake is designed as “a pure story-driven adventure,” filled with “light” amid the underlying dangers of the era. This approach may resonate more effectively with contemporary audiences who prefer escapism over confronting historical controversies.

This change in narrative approach seems to echo previous reports about Ubisoft’s reluctance to touch on sensitive themes, such as race and slavery, in their narratives, particularly after the cancellation of a planned Assassin’s Creed game set in post-Civil War America.

## What’s New in Black Flag Resynced?

Aside from the notable omissions, Black Flag Resynced introduces a variety of new features. Ubisoft has added three new crew officers—**Lucy Baldwin**, **The Padre**, and **Dead Man Smith**—who can be recruited after completing quests that delve into their backgrounds. Each character brings unique ship enhancements, adding a new layer of gameplay.

Additional elements include collectible sea shanties, an option to augment ship weapons, and a revamped Anvil engine that enhances graphics, fluidity, and reduces loading times between land and sea. Players will now encounter a dynamic weather system that could affect gameplay substantially, creating more immersive and challenging sailing experiences.

The remake also addresses frustrations with the original gameplay mechanics—specifically, the tailing and eavesdropping missions. Rather than immediately failing when detected, players can now engage in combat, affording more freedom in how missions can be approached.

## Conclusion

Overall, Black Flag Resynced appears to be a faithful revival of a classic, designed to deliver a polished experience for new and returning players alike. With enhancements aimed at modernizing the gameplay and addressing past frustrations, the remake seems poised to offer a fresh yet familiar adventure on the high seas. While the absence of Freedom Cry is a disappointment, the new elements could still captivate fans as they set sail once more with Edward Kenway. Only time will tell if this remake will rekindle the magic of the original or forge its own path in the hearts of players.

Yep, after years of messages in bottles washing ashore in the form of reports claiming Ubisoft are remaking Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, it’s finally coming on July 9th.
