Valve has announced significant updates to the tagging system used for games on the Steam store. Designed to provide players with a clearer understanding of a game’s genres and themes, the changes involve the introduction of 17 new tags, the removal of 28 existing tags, and the merging or updating of several others.<\/p>\n

In a blog post, Valve detailed these changes, noting that the last major tag overhaul occurred in 2024, during which new tags like Dice, Dwarf, and Boomer Shooter were introduced. The primary objective of refining the tags is to better assist players in discovering games that align with their interests while also enhancing Steam’s recommendation system. Notable additions include the tags Bullet Heaven\u2014pertaining to reverse Bullet Hells that emphasize upgrades while auto-attacking enemies\u2014as well as Samurai and Poker. Housework-themed games have been organized into three distinct tags: Organizing, Cleaning, and Decorating. Additionally, genres rooted in Chinese fantasy, specifically Wuxia and Xianxia, now receive dedicated tags.<\/p>\n

A unique addition to the tagging system is a tag specifically for Capybaras, appealing to fans of this popular animal.<\/p>\n

Conversely, Valve has removed several tags that sparked considerable discussion. Most prominently, the NSFW and Mature tags have been eliminated, a decision likely influenced by recent challenges related to adult gaming content and payment processing. Valve explained that both the NSFW and Mature tags often overlapped significantly with more descriptive tags like Gore, Violent, and Sexual Content. This change raises questions about how adult games may be categorized in the future, particularly regarding their visibility on the platform.<\/p>\n

Other tags that have been discarded include subjective ones like Masterpiece and those tied to specific franchises, such as LEGO or Warhammer 40K. Rarely used tags like Drama, and more thematic tags like America, Blood, Illuminati, and Roguevania have also been removed.
