However, the demo experience has left some fans yearning for more, especially in the character and gameplay departments.

#### The Characters: A Lack of Depth

At the heart of *Exodus* is protagonist Jun Aslan, whose characterization has drawn criticism for being unimaginative. Described as a bland hero with little distinctive personality, Jun does not seem to resonate well with players. His dialogue falls flat amid interactions with his more colorful companions, and the narrative around enslaved talking frogs fails to elevate the stakes or create genuine emotional engagement. The use of evolved Earth species as aliens provides an interesting premise, yet the execution feels stale and overly familiar.

#### Combat Mechanics: Functional but Familiar

The combat system in *Exodus* presents a range of powers and gunplay mechanics, but initial impressions suggest they lack the dynamism found in *Mass Effect* titles. While certain abilities, such as the power that launches enemies into the air, provide moments of fun, most encounters devolve into repetitive shootouts. The implementation of a “catalyst” system recalls previous titles without introducing significant innovation. Issues with targeting during combat further detract from the overall experience, leaving players frustrated in crucial moments.

#### The Highs: Zero-G Combat and Atmosphere

In contrast to the underwhelming character-driven narrative and combat, *Exodus* shines during moments of zero-gravity battles. These segments stand out thanks to a striking atmospheric design that transforms the auditory experience. The quiet isolation of space, coupled with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, enhances the gameplay, creating a stark contrast to the regular firefights. Noteworthy moments, such as the climactic explosion paired with a rising crescendo, showcase a level of creativity potentially underutilized elsewhere in the game.

#### The Future of Exodus: Hope for Better Execution

Although the demo provides a mixed bag of experiences, it is essential to remain optimistic. This early vertical slice may not fully represent the game’s later stages, where developers Archetype Entertainment might reveal more unique and engaging content. The potential for *Exodus* to distinguish itself from competitors exists, though it currently risks becoming an unremarkable addition to the genre.

In conclusion, *Exodus* poses an intriguing concept, yet the implementation thus far suggests a cautious approach to creativity and character development. As anticipation builds for its full release, many hope that the game can evolve beyond its early impressions, transforming into an enriching narrative and gameplay experience that captures the essence of space exploration and the complexities of its characters.

Full disclosure: I did not get to play Exodus with the grumpy mecha octopus sniper. “Where’s the octopus sniper?”, I whispered, confusion melting into sadness as the two other members of my space station infiltration team stepped forward under the support of their dull, seen-it-all-before vertebrae. No, it’s fine. It’s fine.

I’d like to say that the demo’s shooting and roleplaying moments made up for the lack of squidmates. In some places, particularly when venturing back out into the vacuum, it actually did.
