While the game showcases an intriguing premise and some fresh gameplay mechanics, it also presents challenges that can frustrate even the most dedicated players.

**Premise and Mechanics: The Setup of “Menace”**

Set in a semi-rebellious region of space, players take on the role of an imperial space marine whose ship is stranded amid three local factions. Each faction, vying for survival, recognizes the potential of the player’s military prowess as a catalyst for their ascent. This unique twist eliminates traditional currency in favor of “OCI,” a resource that players earn and spend on ship upgrades, enhancing the game’s economic strategy.

The absence of a monetary system adds a layer of depth to mission selection and resource allocation. As players forge alliances and improve relationships with factions, they gain access to unique modules and upgrade options. The semi-randomized “black market” offers a distinct trading experience, allowing for emergency manpower at a scalped price and introducing new recruitable characters.

**Faction Interactions: A Missed Opportunity**

Despite the promise of faction dynamics, the current iteration of “Menace” falls short. Players engage in an array of missions that do not conflict with one another, lacking the strategic weight often vital in faction-based games. The missions are repetitive and revolve around dealing with specific enemies, such as insectoid aliens and rogue factions, with the titular “menace” appearing unexpectedly later in the game without adequate build-up. This creates a disconnect between the player and the game’s narrative, leaving many feeling detached from the overarching conflicts.

**Character Development: Strengths and Weaknesses**

One of the game’s more compelling features lies in character development. Players form squads from a diverse cast of unit types, designed with unique perks instead of relying on traditional class systems. The promotion mechanic is innovative, as it encourages balanced development among characters rather than creating overpowered individuals. Each character’s design is tailored, fostering individuality within gameplay.

However, the experience can feel hollow due to the lack of meaningful interactions and narrative depth. Characters often lack distinction, making it challenging for players to build emotional connections. Even as players gain and promote characters, the underlying narrative layers fail to resonate strongly due to the uninspired personality traits assigned to them.

**Combat Mechanics: Tensions and Tactical Decisions**

The combat system in “Menace” is one of its high points, featuring turn-based shooting with real stakes. Each shot matters, as players manage individual figures on the battlefield, emphasizing tactical decisions regarding team composition and resource management. Potential morale impacts from unit performance enhance this tension, compelling players to consider not only individual character enhancements but also how they complement the wider team’s dynamics.

Challenges arise in the form of the user interface and mission designs, which could benefit from clearer information presentation and refined functionality. Players may find themselves frustrated with convoluted evacuation missions and arbitrary turn limits that detract from the otherwise engaging tactical experience.

**Conclusion: A Work in Progress**

In summary, “Menace” offers an intriguing foundation for a strategic experience, marred only by certain gameplay and narrative shortcomings. While the potential for a deep, engaging story and intricate faction dynamics exists, much depends on future updates and refinements. Players may find enjoyment in its tactical combat and character progression but should be prepared to navigate the gaps that currently exist within its design. As “Menace” evolves, it may yet transform into a standout entry in the strategy genre, fully realizing the rich potential of its premise.

It’s probably poor form to do another “what I said in a group chat” (this time, to culture critic Rowan Kaiser. You’ve been there, though: a game you enjoy, perhaps even begin to love, but it keeps aggravating you, forcing you to vent before you can play it more. This one is carried through that by a core of turn-based shooting, with some interesting simulation and character levelling that often work well together. And some of its annoyances are natural update fodder during its early access period, as perhaps are some areas that currently feel lacking. But man, does it need that carrying sometimes.

[1

post-43378","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
