This approach was evident with the release of the Steam Deck, which showcased the game *Aperture Desk Job*, and with the Valve Index VR headset in 2019, which was paired with *Half-Life: Alyx*, a game that garnered acclaim for its innovative first-person shooter design.

However, the decision to again utilize *Half-Life: Alyx* as a centerpiece for the new Steam Frame headset has raised eyebrows, particularly given the desire for fresh content. Many questioned why Valve opted to revisit an existing title rather than creating a new experience, akin to the smaller demo styles seen with *Aperture Desk Job* or the *The Lab* mini-games.

According to Valve representatives, there were several compelling reasons for this decision. Pierre-Loup Griffais, a SteamOS developer, indicated that the focus was placed on ensuring a comprehensive Steam catalog experience. This approach was meant to leverage the wealth of existing titles to introduce users to various aspects of the new devices. Valuable experiences, such as *SuperHot VR* or *Beat Saber*, continue to thrive and can serve as excellent starting points for new users exploring VR.

Another perspective was provided by Robin Walker, a Valve programmer and co-creator of *Team Fortress 2*. He highlighted the importance of using *Alyx* as a benchmark to help optimize the Steam Frame’s performance. The process of adapting *Alyx* for the new hardware provided critical insights and optimizations applicable to other VR games, as it allowed developers to experiment and test various software configurations effectively.

Engineers like Autumn Aston emphasized the benefits of this testing process, noting that many performance improvements from *Alyx* would be transferable to other games on the Frame platform. Valve is now sharing this knowledge with external developers through their Steam Frame Verified program, which aims to assist in broadening the compatibility of games for the new headset’s capabilities.

Interestingly, there was skepticism within Valve regarding whether *Alyx* could run effectively on the Frame’s Snapdragon processor. However, advancements in performance-saving technologies, such as eye tracking and foveated rendering, along with sufficient RAM, eventually made this ambitious endeavor feasible. Initially perceived as impracticable, ongoing prototyping revealed that these developments could enable *Alyx* to run smoothly and efficiently on the Steam Frame.

The substantial RAM allocation in the Frame was a significant factor in this success, confirming that despite its higher price point, it contributed positively to the game’s performance prospects. The consensus among Valve developers is that even in the absence of new titles, revisiting *Alyx* has ultimately resulted in a stronger library of standalone VR games, promising a better experience for the Steam Frame’s user base.

Valve have sometimes – if perhaps not often enough to call it a grand old tradition – massaged interest in their hardware by pairing the kit with a new game. For the Steam Deck it was Aperture Desk Job, and for 2019’s jammy sod of a VR headset, the Valve Index, it was Half-Life: Alyx, a full-length City 17 adventure that reviewer Graham (RPS in peace) called “a masterclass of first-person shooter design.”

Still, people rarely want to take the same class twice, hence why padding-compacted eyebrows have been raised by Alyx again being a tentpole of the new Steam Frame headset – this time, to showcase the game running in PC-less, standalone VR. Why not make something new, even a smaller tech demo like ADJ or the Index’s own The Lab collection of Portal-themed minigames?

According to Valve staff, several of whom I spoke to prior to the Frame’s Monday night launch, there were several reasons why a return to Alyx was considered more valuable – even though a brand new VR game was, at least briefly, on the table.

[1

post-44167","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
