### The State of Budget Gaming PCs in 2023

As the gaming industry evolves, the landscape of gaming PCs, particularly budget options, has been heavily affected by memory shortages and rising component costs. Once an accessible hobby for many, the dream of building or buying a ‘cheap’ gaming PC is now more challenging, leading to a significant shift in consumer expectations and options.

#### Challenges Facing Budget Gaming PCs

The inflation of prices for essential components such as RAM, SSDs, and graphics cards has resulted in what could be considered a coma for the concept of affordable gaming PCs. In the past, building a gaming rig was often celebrated for its cost-effectiveness. However, the current market reflects a different reality, with entry-level specs for a decent 1080p gaming experience starting in the low quadruple figures. The situation is exacerbated for first-time buyers who must account for additional costs such as monitors and peripherals.

Furthermore, the evolution of handheld gaming PCs has seen similar price hikes. Devices that once promised budget-friendly gaming experiences have surged to price points exceeding £1,000, undermining their status as viable alternatives to traditional gaming setups.

#### A Glimmer of Hope: Affordable Gaming Laptops

Despite the aforementioned challenges, there is a noteworthy exception in the thriving market for gaming laptops. Research indicates that entry-level gaming laptops may be more resilient to price inflation than desktop components. One standout example is the Medion Erazer Scout 15, equipped with an Nvidia RTX 5050. Priced around £850, this laptop offers a compelling option for gamers who may otherwise be deterred by desktop costs.

Though gaming laptops could never match the raw power and modularity of desktops, they present a strong case for those with limited space or who prefer portability. The barriers that once made budget laptops less appealing are gradually being dismantled as models feature improved specifications and design.

#### Performance and Specification Insights

The Medion Erazer Scout 15, while not without its drawbacks, such as limited battery life and noisy operation, offers impressive specs for a budget gaming laptop. It boasts an Intel Core i5-13420H, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, providing a solid baseline for performance. The 144Hz IPS screen, despite not being the brightest, offers decent contrast and refresh rates conducive to exciting gameplay.

The RTX 5050 graphics card offers respectable performance that aligns well with the Steam Machine, showing that budget laptops can still compete on some fronts. The ability to utilize DLSS and ray tracing technology presents aspects of future-proofing as games continue to advance in graphical fidelity.

#### Conclusion: Adapting to a Changing Landscape

While the dream of a cheap gaming PC may seem out of reach for many, the emergence of reliable gaming laptops serves as a promising alternative in a market characterized by relentless price increases. The Medion Erazer Scout 15 exemplifies how affordability can still exist within the contemporary gaming landscape, making gaming more accessible for newcomers.

Although traditional desktop setups maintain certain advantages, the growing viability of budget laptops suggests a shift in consumer approach, allowing players to adapt to the realities of current pricing trends. As gaming technology continues to advance, finding the right balance between cost and performance remains key for both new and experienced gamers alike.

I don’t know if memory shortages have permanently killed off the concept of ‘cheap’ gaming PCs, but they have at least beat it into a coma. On the desktop side, inflated RAM, SSDs and graphics card prices continue to inflict karmic pain for our years of “It’s cheaper to build it yourself” smugness, while formerly affordable handheld PCs are either suffering 40%-plus jackups or launching above £1K from the off. And the Steam Machine! The poor, square Steam Machine.

Every few weeks, possibly in denial, I’ll skim through the shops to see what budget games kit actually looks like in this day and age. Across the last five or six rounds, little has changed: the entry point into decent, more-or-less current-spec 1080p play remains stuck in the low quadruple figures, particularly if you’re fully new to PC ownership and need to factor in a monitor and peripherals. There is one exception, assuming you don’t fancy your luck on the secondhand market, but giving it a hands-on appraisal means confronting an ancient hardware foe of mine. And you all know how little I like to have my prejudices challenged.

Still, research suggests that yes, this truly is the most gaming PC you can get for under £999. So, um. Here it goes. May…maybe gaming laptops aren’t so bad.
