Welcome to my review of the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, a handheld PC that went on sale four months ago. And if you think that’s bad, tell it to the 2025-spec Lenovo Legion Go 2 I’ve left, neglected and unappraised, in the dusty heights of my utility cupboard.
Bungie have announced that the Marathon update originally slated to arrive on September 22nd will not be doing so. Instead, it’ll rock up in December as part of a major update dubbed Symbiosis, which’ll introduce a new permanent PvE mode. Bungie are pegging it as “the first major step in Marathon‘s next chapter” and have decided to ditch their established seasonal cadence for additions as part of this raft of changed plans.
I may have set my expectations for Dawn of War 4 too high, but it’s a series that, to my…
### Arrest of Supposed ShinyHunters Leader: Consequences for Cybersecurity
In a notable turn of events in cybersecurity, Dutch officials recently detained a 24-year-old man in Amsterdam, who is alleged to be a leader of the infamous hacking collective ShinyHunters. This capture, which took place on September 28, comes after a thorough investigation into the group’s operations, which reportedly included breaches of over 100 businesses and entities, featuring prominent targets like the FBI, Rockstar Games, and Ticketmaster.
#### Overview of ShinyHunters
ShinyHunters has become notorious for its bold approaches in data breaches and extortion schemes. The group made headlines earlier this year when it conducted a significant data breach involving Rockstar Games, the developers of the widely acclaimed game *Grand Theft Auto Online*. After the breach, ShinyHunters sought to extort Rockstar for a ransom to prevent the release of compromised confidential data. Despite the threats posed, Rockstar chose not to capitulate to the ransom demands, resulting in the group publicly disclosing the stolen information. This leak revealed details about the financial success of *GTA Online*, with indications showing that the game earns over a million dollars in revenue each day.
#### The Arrest: Who is Pepijn van der Stap?
While the Dutch National Police initially withheld the suspect’s name, later reports from *Reuters* confirmed the arrested individual as Pepijn van der Stap. Prior to his arrest, Van der Stap held a significant position as the offensive cybersecurity lead at Neo Security in Amsterdam. His prior convictions linked to hacking activities had led to assertions that he had since reformed and moved into a legitimate cybersecurity role.
Nevertheless, the FBI argues that Van der Stap has been actively engaged with ShinyHunters since 2025, casting doubt on the validity of his claims of reformation. The FBI’s position sharply contrasts with Van der Stap’s assertions of having departed from his former lifestyle.
#### Effects on the Cybersecurity Landscape
The ramifications of Van der Stap’s arrest are twofold. Firstly, it conveys a clear warning to cybercriminals that law enforcement is growing more adept and determined to confront cybercrime directly. The public nature of the remarks from Brett Leatherman, the FBI’s assistant director of its Cyber Division, enhances this notion. In a caution to remaining ShinyHunters members, he advised them to come forward voluntarily to avoid unavoidable repercussions. This type of messaging signals a strategic transformation in how authorities approach cybercriminal organizations, stressing the dangers linked to persistent illegal conduct.
Secondly, Van der Stap’s arrest and the investigations into ShinyHunters may provoke a wider dialogue on the ethics surrounding “reformed” hackers in cybersecurity roles. This scenario raises vital questions about trust and transparency within the cybersecurity sector, along with the measures in place to prevent individuals with a history of cybercrime from gaining access to sensitive data.
#### Reactions from ShinyHunters and the Cyber Community
Following the arrest, ShinyHunters has publicly denied any association with Van der Stap within its organization. Their rejection of the allegations suggests a potential defensive maneuver to reduce the impact of law enforcement scrutiny. By asserting that authorities lack competence, they seem to be striving to preserve their operational security and shield remaining members from further investigation.
#### Conclusion
The arrest of Pepijn van der Stap marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle between cybersecurity experts and cybercriminal organizations. As law enforcement ramps up its initiatives to dismantle groups like ShinyHunters, the cautionary tale of Van der Stap highlights the delicate balance between reformation and relapse in the hacking domain. The cybersecurity community will undoubtedly be monitoring closely to observe how this story develops and what it portends for the future of cybercrime.
