In a recent discussion, new insights regarding the forthcoming FPS title emerged. Battlefield 6 technical lead Christian Buhl addresses the development of crossplay and the enhancements made for Xbox Series S. The game’s combat designer Matthew Nickerson also participated in the IGN discussion, detailing the functioning of their crossplay mechanics, which will be exclusively available for consoles. Both speakers highlighted two concerns that players had regarding the upcoming release.

Combat designer Nickerson confirmed that crossplay will strictly be a console feature. He noted that crossplay is simply a toggle accessible within the game. Additionally, for matchmaking preferences, if a console player is seeking a game, the lobby will prioritize other console players “within a set time frame” before filling the remaining slots with PC players, if necessary.

Nickerson mentioned that Battlefield 6 has crossplay enabled by default, requiring players to turn it off manually. When disabled, console-only crossplay is activated, which permits PlayStation and Xbox players to connect; however, PC players will not join the lobby. Thus, when playing with crossplay enabled for consoles, priority will be given to console players. If it is turned off, then only PlayStation and Xbox participants will be included in the lobby.

After fine-tuning Battlefield 6 to meet the specs of Xbox Series S, the technical director asserted that the game is now “super solid” and “performant” on that console, running at a “smooth 60 frames per second.” “I would say that the most significant challenge we faced was [managing the console’s limited] memory,” Buhl remarked. “Xbox Series S indeed has less memory than even our mid-tier PC. There was a moment…Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months back when we came to realize that many of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”

According to the technical director, Battlefield 6 is now “super solid” and “performant” on Xbox Series S, maintaining a “smooth 60 frames per second.” EA recently shared information about the maps and modes in Battlefield 6, in addition to challenges that players can accomplish to earn rewards once the full game launches on October 10. Our preview by Kurston Timothy highlighted that “from quality-of-life enhancements to the class system to the new and exhilarating maps, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be one of the top FPS launches of the year.”
