The Dragon Quest franchise, a cherished mainstay within the RPG category, is presently witnessing a wave of remakes, with four distinct remakes surfacing in just a year and a half. This encompasses the HD-2D remakes of the initial three titles and the recently announced “Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined.” This pattern indicates that Square Enix may be looking to refresh the whole series, although it seems they are undertaking this in a non-chronological sequence.

The series’ creator Yuji Horii discussed this during a YouTube stream, according to RPG Site. When questioned about the leap to Dragon Quest VII instead of remaking IV, V, and VI, Horii stated that the choice was made randomly. His co-host, Kazuhiko “Masharito” Torishima, expressed surprise at this answer, noting that it does not imply that the other titles are not being remade. Horii’s remarks suggested that additional remakes might be in the pipeline, which aligns with Square Enix’s recent trend of revitalizing classic games like Final Fantasy 7 and Romancing Saga 2.

Horii also highlighted the ambition to make these titles accessible on modern systems, indicating that the remakes strive for a cohesive experience across current gaming platforms. This approach could be especially advantageous for Dragon Quest, considering its fragmented history across numerous past platforms. Nevertheless, fans will have to await official announcements to verify the full scope of these intentions.

“Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined” is scheduled to be released on February 5, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1&2, and PC, signifying the next phase in this ambitious remake endeavor.
