Remedy Entertainment’s CEO Tero Virtala has resigned from his role at the Alan Wake/Control development studio and will be replaced right away. The statement from Remedy Entertainment doesn’t provide details regarding the abrupt departure, but it discloses that both Tero Virtala and the company’s Board of Directors have amicably agreed on the exit, with Virtala leaving immediately.
Although no specific reason has been disclosed, Remedy Entertainment’s latest release, a spin-off of Control titled FBC: Firebreak, has recently faced significant underperformance despite the new overhaul update, Breakpoint. A recent “profit warning” announcement on Remedy Entertainment’s official website indicated a revision of “its 2025 outlook by adjusting its guidance on operating profit,” suggesting “operating profit (EBIT) to be negative and below the previous year.”
FBC: Firebreak is notably the inaugural multiplayer title in the Remedy Entertainment portfolio, and CGMagazine’s assessment describes it as “a fast-paced and somewhat lighthearted co-op shooter that feels both familiar and genuinely unique,” while other reviewers have expressed mixed opinions about the game. FBC: Firebreak holds a 64% critical rating on Metacritic, with Steam users also displaying varied sentiments towards the spin-off.
During this transition phase, Remedy’s Board of Directors has designated Markus Mäki as the interim CEO, effective from October 22, 2025. Mäki is one of the founding members of Remedy, having been part of the Board since 1995 and serving as the acting Chairman of the Board until this interim CEO appointment.
Markus Mäki stated, “I want to express my gratitude to Tero Virtala for his significant contributions to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally appreciate Tero for our productive collaboration and wish him all the best moving forward,” in reference to the former CEO’s exit.
While Remedy Entertainment is anticipated to forfeit previously expected gains in operating profit, the company confirmed that the development of Control 2 is proceeding as planned, and the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake project is also underway.
