I’m going to park my feelings of unease at the fact that it’s somehow already been a year since Dispatch came out, as developer AdHoc Studio have revealed some pretty neat sounding additions to the game to commemorate its first anniversary. Well, if you have the deluxe edition anyway (sorry, regular edition owners).
Umamusume: Pretty Derby has turned out to be one of the most popular games in the world, partly due to…
**The Emergence of Generative AI in Japanese Game Development: Important Insights from CESA’s Initial Report**
In advance of the detailed report set to be published in December, Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) has released a preliminary overview showcasing key trends within the gaming sector, especially concerning the utilization of generative AI. The overview indicates that an impressive 85.8 percent of Japanese game developers are now incorporating generative AI into their processes. This signifies a notable rise from last year’s report, which showed that merely 51 percent were leveraging the technology.
The information gathered originates from a survey carried out at the CEDEC conference, a significant event for game creators in Japan. The integration of generative AI among developers includes a wide range of applications, such as asset creation and administrative duties supported by tools like ChatGPT and Copilot. Importantly, there has been heightened scrutiny regarding AI-generated assets, particularly following a contentious presentation by Level-5, the studio responsible for franchises such as *Dark Cloud* and *Professor Layton*, which stirred concerns among fans regarding the authenticity of the visuals showcased.
In the survey, most developers conveyed that generative AI has had a beneficial impact on their work. Specifically, 63 percent of the participants reported daily use of the technology, while 22.8 percent employed it occasionally. Moreover, 8.6 percent mentioned that their organizations had implemented guidelines regarding its application. From the total group surveyed (1,349 developers), stated benefits included shorter production times and reduced costs, with 837 developers recognizing an increase in creativity and 738 identifying a reduction in technical obstacles. However, only 147 developers believed that the application of AI led to measurable improvements in the user experience.
It is crucial to acknowledge the complexities of the survey data. The responses were collected from individual developers, meaning one company could have multiple developers involved with similar viewpoints. Additionally, the survey did not provide a complete picture of AI usage by company. According to another CESA survey conducted among member organizations, 74 percent confirmed they had set policies regarding the use of generative AI. Among the surveyed entities, there was a nearly even distribution between companies not using generative AI (27 companies) and those that were (26), with only 12 using it specifically for visual asset development and an even smaller number for narrative, localization, quality assurance, or programming tasks.
The rising trend of generative AI’s application in the Japanese gaming industry underscores a growing pattern, but it also highlights the necessity of policy formulation as companies manage the incorporation of this technology. Many of these policies are a response to mixed feedback from players and widespread concerns expressed online. While there is strong support for generative AI in East Asian regions like Japan and South Korea, global responses have demonstrated some backlash. This is illustrated by controversies surrounding titles such as *Crazy Taxi: World Tour*, indicating that gaming companies need to approach AI implementation cautiously, unlike some sectors that are rapidly embracing swift adoption for efficiency and cost reduction.
In summary, as the complete CESA report draws near, the data thus far distinctly reflects both the promising expansion and the intricate challenges associated with generative AI in the Japanese gaming industry. The equilibrium between innovation, creative integrity, and consumer feedback will likely be crucial as the industry adapts and progresses in the years to come.
