“Recent Changes Could Accelerate New Halo Release for Xbox, but Historical Trends Indicate Risk of Uninspired Gameplay”

When I was younger, I loved Chewits. Each parcel of chewy sugar threatened to tear out a tooth, but their punch of strawberry, blackcurrent, and orange flavour was hard to resist. Left to my own devices, I would take packs of Chewits, unwrap all the sweets, and press them together in the palm of my hand until they formed a single Chewit boulder. The different colours and flavours became indistinguishable but the sheer size and density of the thing was attractive to my inner glutton. The first time I did this, I put the whole thing into my mouth and when I tried to bite down on the sweet mass my jaw became almost glued together by the sugary morass. Panicking, I tried to swallow it down and almost choked, as the formless Chewitts filled my oesophagus. Before I turned completely blue, I was able to cough it back up.

I want to say I only did this once, but it took a good three or four times before I realised squashing things together, while it seems could only multiply each Chewits’ amazingness, can actually make a formless mass that will choke you.

So, onto Xbox’s plans to consolidate their studios.

Steam Targeted by Malware Assaults Twice Within a Year: Worries Rise

### An In-Depth Look at the New Malware Threat Targeting *People Playground*

*People Playground*, a physics simulation game hosted on Steam, has recently gained significant attention due to the rise of malicious mods that threaten players’ computer security. Since its release in 2019, which led to a surge in popularity with hundreds of thousands of reviews, the game has encountered notable challenges related to malware. The latest incident took place in September 2023, prompting developer mestiez to issue an urgent alert to the community.

#### The Character of the Threat

On September 21, 2023, mestiez disabled the *People Playground* Steam Workshop following the identification of a particularly dangerous mod. As per the developer’s announcement, this mod is claimed to infiltrate players’ computers, delete their data, and even access their Discord accounts while distributing additional harmful mods to sustain the threat. The gravity of this attack signifies a considerable escalation compared to earlier malware incidents associated with the game.

Mestiez expressed, “I can’t say with certainty what exactly happened or what this program did, but it’s not looking good.” The consequences of the malicious mod could range from permanent loss of personal data to the compromise of identifiable information, which has understandably unsettled the player base. Although mestiez reassured players that the malware does not focus on passwords, tokens, or cookies directly, the advice to alter passwords and secure accounts underscores the potential dangers involved.

#### Historical Background and Community Response

This is not the inaugural instance of malware issues for *People Playground*. Earlier in 2023, the game encountered a less severe malware attack that influenced game files and mod lists but did not jeopardize player security to the extent of this most recent event. The recurring nature of such attacks raises concerns regarding the game’s modding community and the possible vulnerabilities that exist within the platform.

In light of the alarming news, numerous players have voiced their discontent and anxiety on Steam’s comment section, with some indicating their plans to cease playing the game entirely. Comments like “Crazy this is the first post even though there’s been several Malware mods pop up” and “I’m not gonna get all mad and rant, so I’ll keep it short. To the devs: this is SO not ok to have!” capture the frustrations of a community feeling betrayed by ongoing security challenges.

#### Developer’s Accountability and Community Confidence

Mestiez has candidly recognized the specific challenges confronting *People Playground*, stressing the necessity of transparency while advising players against jumping to conclusions or speculating about the individuals behind the harmful mods. The declaration, “This is entirely my responsibility, and we gain nothing from throwing around rumors or speculations,” reflects a commitment to owning the situation, while also highlighting the fragile balance developers must maintain between community trust and safety.

#### Conclusion

The recent malware incident involving *People Playground* acts as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities present within online gaming communities, especially concerning mods from user-generated content. As the situation evolves, the developer’s recommendation to remove mods and perform antivirus scans is a crucial measure for protecting players. The gaming community will be closely monitoring how mestiez addresses the situation moving forward and whether *People Playground* can rebuild player trust in its modding ecosystem. In the interim, players are advised to stay alert and prioritize their online security.

Ninja Theory, Developers of Hellblade, Face Potential Closure Following Microsoft’s Inability to Secure Buyers

Tapas Declares Shutdown, Disheartening Comics Creators and Readers

### Tapas to Shut Down: A Blow for Comic Creators and Readers

Tapas, a prominent platform for comics and web novels in North America, is about to cease operations, causing turmoil among its community of creators and readers. The announcement, covered by BigGo Finance, reveals that Tapas has turned into a financial liability for its parent organization, Kakao Entertainment, which purchased the platform in 2021 for around $800 million. The report mentions that Tapas once hosted over 100,000 titles from 75,000 creators and had attracted more than 10 million registered users.

The sudden news has not originated from Tapas itself, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction on social media. Numerous creators find themselves in a troublesome situation as the shutdown will eradicate a major channel for showcasing their work and generating income. Tapas earns revenue via advertisements and selling currency that enables users to access premium stories, sharing part of that income with the artists creating the content.

In light of the news, members within the Tapas Discord server have started to propose alternative platforms where creators can shift their work. Furthermore, conversations are intensifying around the significance of self-hosting as a feasible course of action. While some resources are being provided to help creators in adapting to new platforms, the community is apprehensive that the closure of Tapas will complicate matters for many readers trying to keep up with their favorite creators, as the platform served as a centralized location for discovering diverse works.

One Tapas creator, referred to as PerfectSerenad3, expressed their disappointment, noting their achievements with 7,000 subscribers and over half a million views on their comic “Lucifer’s Ace.” This sentiment mirrors a broader concern among creators about the future of their works and the potential dwindling of their audience as they face the necessity of locating new hosting options.

As the shutdown of Tapas approaches, the comic and web novel community faces uncertainty. This situation acts as a harsh reminder of the fragility within the digital content arena, where platforms can rise and fall, affecting the livelihoods of creators and the experiences of their audiences.

Halo Developer Promotions and Layoffs Occurring in the Same Week

### Halo Studios Experiences Job Cuts Amid Corporate Overhaul

Halo Studios, formerly recognized as 343 Industries, has emerged as a prominent victim in a substantial series of layoffs unveiled by Xbox. This overhaul, referred to by Xbox leaders as a corporate “reset,” led to the termination of over 250 staff members, continuing a trend that commenced with significant job cuts in July. The modifications are part of a tactical shift within Xbox, which has repositioned the Halo franchise under Activision, altering Halo Studios’ function to a support role rather than a leading development studio.

On September 22, Xbox leaders, including Matt Booty, acknowledged the layoffs as an element of an assertive restructuring initiative. The evolution for Halo, a key franchise for the Xbox ecosystem, signifies a wider alteration in corporate strategy, raising apprehensions regarding the future of the studio and its workforce.

One affected developer is Cinematic Director Josh Daniels. He shared on LinkedIn that he had received a promotion shortly before encountering termination, adding a personal dimension to the disruption. “Promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild,” Daniels expressed, underscoring the absurdity of his predicament and showing an eagerness to explore forthcoming opportunities in cinematic direction and production.

This development has ignited criticism concerning the treatment of employees and the noticeable absence of a coherent strategy within Xbox. Numerous observers have pointed out that the swift nature of these decisions prompts doubts about the coordination and planning among diverse divisions within Xbox. The initiative to elevate talent while concurrently implementing layoffs cultivates an environment of disorder and unpredictability.

Daniels’ ordeal reflects a wider sentiment among gaming professionals, particularly after instances where developers have been released shortly after celebrating project milestones. For example, a developer from the Gears of War series was dismissed just days after the team marked the completion of their game, highlighting the volatility that appears to typify the current corporate landscape within Xbox.

As Xbox advances with its restructuring endeavors, the effects on employees, developers, and the future of cherished franchises like Halo and Gears of War remain uncertain. The layoffs are not merely statistics; they signify individuals and their careers, highlighting the necessity for a more considerate approach to corporate strategy and employee relations in the continually changing gaming sector.
