Valve’s involvement in funding open-source emulation tools is set to significantly enhance the compatibility of PC games on mobile devices. Their latest project, Fex, is a free compatibility tool designed to enable the functionality of Windows applications on mobile ARM processors. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed that the company has been supporting Fex’s development prior to the announcement of the ARM-based Steam Frame standalone VR headset, expected to launch in 2026.
Fex will be integrated into SteamOS, allowing the Steam Frame to run Steam games directly from the headset’s internal chip. However, Fex is already available and can be found on GitHub, suggesting its potential to bring Steam games to Android smartphones, albeit without any current plans for Valve-branded phones. Griffais noted that while Valve is not ruling out the production of SteamOS-compatible phones, their focus remains on optimizing gaming experiences for existing platforms like living room setups and handheld devices, such as the Steam Machine and Steam Deck, which operate on x86 processors.
The challenge lies in adapting to ARM hardware, which Fex and the Steam Frame are specifically designed to address. Initial tests indicate promising results, with games like Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong performing well on the Steam Frame during demonstrations.
While Valve has not committed to producing a Steam phone, tools like Fex could make it possible to enjoy Steam games on mobile devices. For instance, Fex is one of several emulation layers utilized by the Gamehub, a game launcher app on Android developed by GameSir, a peripheral manufacturer. Users report mixed results when attempting to run successfully on the Steam Frame, highlighting the continued development needed for reliable gameplay on mobile.
As Valve continues to push for cross-device compatibility, this effort could benefit both the company and gamers by expanding access to Steam’s extensive library across a variety of devices. This initiative aims not only to profit Valve but also to lower compatibility barriers, facilitating a more seamless gaming experience for users.
