This month’s update for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, version 1.3.1, is set to release on December 9th, following the substantial 1.3.0 update. While not as extensive, this update introduces notable features, including a new map type and several civilization balancing adjustments that players should be aware of as they engage in their strategic gameplay during the holiday season.

A key highlight of the 1.3.1 update is the introduction of the Shattered Seas map. This map design modifies the traditional Pangea concept by breaking the central landmass into multiple sizable islands separated by narrow waterways. According to Firaxis QA lead Shaun Wilson, this design ensures players encounter plenty of naval action throughout their game. Each player starts on a distinct defensible landmass, connected primarily by shallow coastal waters, while the distant islands remain separated by deeper oceanic areas. The Shattered Seas map is expected to provide an engaging experience for those who enjoy island-hopping strategies or constructing port fortresses, although it will need to demonstrate its uniqueness compared to existing archipelago maps.

In addition to the new map, world generation has also seen some refinements. The size variability of biomes and their dependence on rainfall have been increased, leading to a more complex and realistic distribution of terrain. The introduction of stronger influences from rivers and rain shadows near mountains means players will experience a more diverse and engaging global landscape.

The 1.3.1 update also includes civ balancing adjustments, most notably affecting Egypt, whose yields from minor rivers have been reduced. Rome has received revisions to its Auxilia and Cursus Honorum tradition encouraging players to keep them active beyond just troop training periods. Russia’s serfdom civic has been modified to boost wonder-building speeds by 10%.

Moreover, this update marks the release of the second part of the Tides of Power DLC. This expansion introduces Sayyida al Hurra, a prominent 16th-century Moroccan privateer leader, along with new civilizations from the Ottomans and Iceland. Players can still claim the full DLC, which includes content from the previous month’s update featuring Blackbeard, for free until January 5th. Additionally, more significant changes are forthcoming, such as the anticipated ability to play as a single civilization throughout the entire game, bypassing the current age system.

Overall, the 1.3.1 update for Civilization VII promises enhancements that will enrich the strategic experience for players, particularly those eager to explore new map types and engage in varied gameplay strategies this holiday season.
