Witcher 3 REDkit Modification Enhances Kaer Morhen to Align with Witcher 1 Version, Featuring Numerous References

Since CD Projekt released The Witcher 3’s REDkit modding tools a couple of years ago, it’s been exciting to observe a continuous stream of location revamps and new quests for the beloved RPG. The latest noteworthy entry is a significant overhaul of Kaer Morhen, the iconic hangout of Geralt and his fellow Witchers, undertaken by a seasoned modder. This project aims to expand the area to align with its portrayal in the original Witcher game.

Introducing “Kaer Morhen Extended Edition,” created by the modder OlivierR45455566465. This mod seeks to enrich the fortress and its surrounding valley, bringing it in line with the aesthetics of The Witcher 1. OlivierR45455566465 has a strong resume, having previously utilized Redkit to enhance the Blood and Wine DLC’s Beauclair Palace with details true to the books. This latest endeavor marks their second attempt to revamp Kaer Morhen, following an initial mod aimed at reconstructing the keep as it might have appeared during its peak.

In the mod’s description, OlivierR45455566465 shares how, shortly after the release of the first Kaer Morhen mod, several fans reached out, expressing a desire for an updated version that showcased Kaer Morhen in its entirety. Although initially hesitant, the modder eventually yielded to the enthusiastic requests from the community.

To honor these requests, Kaer Morhen Extended has been equipped with a restored second floor and basement, in addition to several landmarks that CD Projekt did not transfer over for The Witcher 3. The upper levels now feature dedicated quarters for each Witcher, while the basement includes a laboratory, a crypt, and a secret room influenced by the Netflix animated film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

Outside the fortress, players can explore locations like the old Kikimore mine from the Price Of Neutrality DLC of the first Witcher game, as well as remnants from the camp of the Kaedweni sorceress Sabrina Glevissig. Although the modder has kept some details under wraps, they assure players that there are “many other surprises” inspired by The Witcher 1 and the early 2000s Polish Witcher TV adaptation.

Overall, Kaer Morhen Extended Edition serves as an excellent way for fans to revisit the universe while awaiting news about The Witcher Remake and potential additional DLC for The Witcher 3. The mod is user-friendly, with minimal requirements, the only major one being Ray Bleach if players plan to enable ray tracing.
