Developers at Heart Machine, the studio known for popular games such as *Hyper Light Drifter*, *Solar Ash*, and *Possessor(s)*, have taken a significant step towards protecting their rights by forming a union. This movement comes alongside broader trends in the gaming industry, where employees at larger corporations like Microsoft are also seeking collective bargaining power to improve working conditions.
The union effort at Heart Machine is officially affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), specifically its local branch 9003. This formation is characterized as a “wall-to-wall unit,” meaning it encompasses all frontline employees within the studio. The decision to unionize follows a series of layoffs affecting staff, sparking concern and the need for greater job security and better working conditions.
Steph Aligbe, a gameplay tools engineer and member of CWA local 9003, expressed the motivation behind this collective action: “Watching that momentum grow made me realize that if we love this work, we have to protect it, especially now.” Aligbe highlighted the importance of the studio’s voluntary recognition of the union, reflecting a commitment to uphold labor values and the desire to negotiate a contract that would ensure a safer and more equitable workplace.
The push for union recognition began in February when a super-majority of workers—more than 50%—indicated their support for CWA representation. Organizers subsequently presented this request to the studio’s management, leading to the acknowledgment of the union’s formation.
Heart Machine has faced difficulties in recent months, including notable staff cuts that took place shortly before the launch of *Possessor(s)* in late 2022. These layoffs raised concerns about the company’s staffing stability, as former community and public relations developer Yiyi Zhang remarked on the uncertainty regarding the team members involved in the game’s development by its release date. Despite this, outgoing narrative director for *Possessor(s)* encouraged players to purchase the game, asserting that former employees would still benefit from sales revenue, and emphasized the passion that drives the development of games.
