Last year, the long-awaited Skyrim quest mod, Lordbound, finally soft launched after spending a decade in development. This mod has garnered attention not just for its extensive gameplay enhancements, but also for its innovative incorporation into the broader lore of Skyrim, making it semi-canon thanks to a new add-on approved by Bethesda.
The former project lead of Lordbound, Arcky, shared insights during a conversation on their Discord server, reflecting on the evolution of the team from gamers to modders and eventually to indie game developers. About 18 months ago, Arcky and RoKMod, a notable dungeon designer for Lordbound, decided to leave their stable game development positions to focus on creating another large mod for Skyrim, citing the risks and expenses associated with independent game development.
This new mod, titled Legacy of Orsinium, is a substantial DLC-sized expansion that integrates seamlessly with Lordbound and includes familiar lore elements. Its release through Bethesda’s Creations initiative grants it approval, allowing it to exist within Skyrim’s canon in a semi-official capacity—a point Arcky communicated with a hint of humor.
Despite the developers branching off to create Legacy of Orsinium under their indie studio, Veelpoot, they assured fans that this shift has not hindered the ongoing development of Lordbound. The tools developed for Legacy of Orsinium have already proven beneficial in furthering the progress of Lordbound, illustrating a collaborative synergy between the two projects.
While the introduction of Bethesda-affiliated mods like Creations has sparked criticism from players and modders alike, it has opened doors for developers who have dedicated years to modding. For instance, creators of the popular Fallout 4 mod Sim Settlements transitioned into indie development, using income earned from their modding efforts to support further projects.
Arcky expressed satisfaction in being able to compensate several of the talented developers who have contributed to Lordbound over the years, marking a significant milestone in their modding journey.
For players interested in the Legacy of Orsinium, the expansion introduces new quests set within the Orc strongholds in Skyrim, requiring 1000 Creation Credits, which equates to approximately £8.79 or $9.99 in real-world currency. More information can be found on the Bethesda website.
