### Menace Update: Enhancements and Gameplay Overhaul for the Grim Tactics Game
The tactical turn-based game **Menace**, known for its dark and gritty theme, is set to receive a significant update that promises to enhance the overall gameplay experience. Developers Overhype have announced several key changes, addressing player feedback and improving the functionality of game mechanics. This update is currently in beta testing, with a planned launch date of **April 22nd**.
#### Major Changes in Promotion Tax
One of the significant changes is the removal of the “not-so-popular” promotion tax system, which introduced a supply surcharge that increased with each promotion of the same character. Overhype admitted that while this mechanic made sense from a game design perspective, it frustrated players, turning promotions into a punitive experience. The developers noted that last-minute promotions often disrupted thoughtfully planned loadouts for missions.
To balance the removal of this surcharge, the game will see an increase in the supply costs for squad members while lowering their base supply costs. This adjustment aims to provide players with more base supplies at the beginning of the game, making the cost of squad upgrades feel more rewarding. Promotions will also be calibrated based on character star levels; characters with fewer stars will incur lower promotion costs.
#### Improvements to Urban Combat Dynamics
Another pivotal update is the introduction of new abilities for all units, allowing them to clear away wrecked vehicles, which will alleviate congestion in cramped urban maps. This follows a previous update that added a cut wire fence skill, which improved players’ tactical maneuverability.
#### Revamped Construct Enemy Faction
Perhaps the most notable aspect of the update is the comprehensive rework of the Construct enemy faction. Previously criticized for their lack of uniqueness and variety, the Constructs will undergo various changes. Notably, they will no longer disrupt player morale directly with their attacks; instead, they will inflict morale damage through alternate means. For instance, Construct Drones will emit disturbing screams when destroyed, affecting nearby enemies.
The faction will also feature more units but with reduced tankiness and accuracy. Construct Soldiers, while still capable anti-vehicle units, will no longer utilize rockets but will gain enhanced damage capabilities against armored opponents. Additionally, they can now mark targets for other Construct units like drones and Guncrawlers.
Guncrawlers have also been upgraded, equipped with rocket launchers comparable to the player’s tier one weapons. A new scanning skill will encumber affected player units, reducing their concealment temporarily. The Shamblers, described as “walking grenades,” now boast an increased attack range and enhanced damage against armor.
Additionally, a new and powerful Construct support unit named the **Master Unit** is being introduced, with details withheld until players encounter it post-update.
#### Visual Enhancements and New Loot
Alongside gameplay adjustments, the visual design of the Construct faction has been revamped to enhance contrast and accentuate their grotesque, zombie-like appearance. New loot items will also be available for players to utilize in the Workshop.
#### Anticipation for Release
The excitement surrounding this update reflects the evolving nature of **Menace** as it strives to improve player experience while maintaining its grim atmosphere. As players eagerly await the update’s launch on April 22nd, they look forward to whether these changes will elevate **Menace** beyond the developer’s previous acclaimed title, **Battle Brothers**. With adjustments aiming to enhance both tactical depth and visual engagement, players are set for an intriguing continuation of their missions against the remorseless constructs of the Menace world.
