Fortnite developers Epic Games have announced their decision to honor refunds for cosmetics linked to the American singer D4vd, after he was charged with the murder of a 14-year-old girl. Players who wish to obtain these refunds will need to reach out directly to Fortnite support for assistance. Epic has indicated that additional changes concerning this situation are forthcoming.
The controversy stems from the charges against David Anthony Burke, professionally known as D4vd, who recently pleaded not guilty to murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. The dismembered remains of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez were discovered in the trunk of a Tesla vehicle registered to Burke on September 8, 2025. The allegations have sparked widespread outrage and concern within the community.
In a response to players expressing concern regarding D4vd-themed Fortnite items, Epic Games confirmed via their official Twitter account that they are actively addressing the situation. They stated, “We hear the concerns. We have a bunch of changes we’re rolling out over time.” The first step will involve an immediate self-service refund option available on April 28th for anyone who purchased D4vd-themed items. Currently, players can request refunds through player support.
The D4vd-themed item bundle, known as “d4vd’s Locker Bundle,” was introduced in April as part of Chapter 6: Season 2 of Fortnite. Burke has also contributed songs to the game, including an official anthem titled “Locked and Loaded,” which has been featured in Fortnite as a Jam Track.
Historically, Epic Games has modified or removed add-ons in response to real-world events, although the circumstances of this recent case are notably severe. In a previous instance, the developers temporarily pulled and altered a Peacemaker-inspired emote after it was scrutinized for allegedly resembling a swastika following a plot twist in the related show.
