**Exploring Family Reunion: A Unique Time-Attack Adventure Game**
Last week at Gamescom Latam, I had the opportunity to play Family Reunion, a chaotic and intriguing time-attack adventure game. Created by developer Leandro Waibe, this game immerses players in the experience of a disinterested child forced to entertain themselves during an interminable family meal. The playful hand-doodled art style evokes nostalgia, resembling the early drawings of childhood before we learned proper penmanship.
**Gameplay Mechanics and Objectives**
Family Reunion cleverly crafts its gameplay mechanics around a central antagonist: the clock. The game’s tension builds as players must find ways to amuse themselves and speed up the time until the next course is served. Unlike a real-time meal, players can creatively engage with the setting to quicken the pace of the clock. The goal is to escape the slow crawl of time, which is effectively portrayed through the initial dread of being stuck at a table against one’s will.
Players begin by choosing from three personalities, each with distinct attributes that influence gameplay. The Introvert lacks social skills but excels in daydreaming; the Chatty can engage in straightforward conversation but has limited creativity; and the Adventurer possesses energy and the ability to explore the house while engaging in chaotic antics.
I opted for the Introvert, resonating with its portrayal of childhood imagination. Using my creativity, I found myself conjuring aliens to stave off the boredom of a blank plate. Actions such as knocking over the salt shaker or doodling on the table were simplistic yet effective ways to quicken the clock, providing a sense of accomplishment in the otherwise mundane setting.
**Exploration and Interaction**
Exploration is a fundamental aspect of Family Reunion, where finding objects can transform gameplay dynamics. During my playthrough, I discovered a pen, leading to an amusing scenario where my character could draw on the table, further advancing the game’s time dilation feature. However, mischief often comes with risks, as my actions could draw attention from family members, leading to tension that would slow the clock once more.
The game introduces elements of RPG mechanics through moments of decision-making when family members intervene. Players must navigate their responses, weighing the consequences of their actions. This led to a frenetic back-and-forth between my imaginative endeavors and the game’s myriad reactions.
As gameplay progressed, the interactions became increasingly complex, transforming simple actions—like poking at soup—into a dynamic challenge. I was so engaged that I lost track of time, ultimately concluding my demo in just over 17 minutes, despite the three-hour time limit set within the game.
**Development and Future Plans**
The humorous and chaotic nature of Family Reunion was a highlight of my experience. Upon finishing my session, I inquired about the intended playtime and was met with a shrug from Waibe, who stated, “I added the time for fun.” With no specific release date announced, the game is targeting an early access launch by the end of 2026, promising additional features and content that will deepen the experience.
**Conclusion**
Family Reunion offers a fresh take on the adventure genre, celebrating childhood imagination while cleverly addressing the absurdity of family dynamics through humor and chaotic gameplay. As excitement builds for its future release, this unique title stands out as a creative exploration of mundane experiences transformed into extraordinary fun.
