Ex-Lead Designer of Baldur's Gate Rejects Opportunity to Develop Baldur's Gate 4, Mentioning Hesitation to Compete

Larian Studios, famous for developing the highly praised role-playing game *Baldur’s Gate 3*, grabbed attention by opting not to create a sequel to the game. This choice was supported by James Ohlen, the chief designer of the initial *Baldur’s Gate* and co-lead designer for its follow-up, *Baldur’s Gate 2*, who similarly rejected an offer from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to work on *Baldur’s Gate 4*.

In a discussion with *PC Gamer*, Ohlen revealed that right after Larian’s announcement, he was contacted by Hasbro CEO Chris Cox, who asked if he would be interested in developing the series’ next chapter. Ohlen confessed his uncertainty, referencing the intimidating challenge of going up against *Baldur’s Gate 3*. He detailed the difficulties of the gaming environment, noting, “I wouldn’t want to compete against that. Working on [Archetype’s sci-fi action RPG] *Exodus* is tough enough, but having to go head-to-head with *Baldur’s Gate 3*? That would be madness.”

Notably, Ohlen’s development studio, Archetype Entertainment, is part of Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, adding an intricate layer to his refusal. His hesitance to tackle *Baldur’s Gate 4* stemmed not only from the anticipated challenges but also from his conviction that he would struggle to replicate the essence that made the previous titles successful.

Following his decision, Ohlen has distanced himself from Archetype Entertainment and the gaming sector entirely, citing burnout as the reason. Meanwhile, amidst these transitions, another significant figure from the earlier *Baldur’s Gate* games, Kevin Martens, who co-designed *Baldur’s Gate 2*, is said to be working on an upcoming remake of that title.

Currently, it remains unclear who will take on the task of creating *Baldur’s Gate 4*. The high expectations left by Larian’s groundbreaking take on *Baldur’s Gate 3* represent a major hurdle for any future ventures in the cherished franchise, leaving fans both excited and anxious about the next installment of the series.
