**Cliff Bleszinski: A Journey Through Addiction and Redemption in Game Development**

Cliff Bleszinski, renowned designer behind iconic franchises such as *Gears of War* and *Unreal Tournament*, has openly discussed his battle with alcoholism and its profound impact on his personal life and career as he contemplates a return to game development. Following a serious health scare—a drinking-related seizure in March 2023—Bleszinski has been sober for four months, reflecting on the challenges he has faced.

In an insightful interview with Brian Crecente for 80 Level, Bleszinski reveals that his struggles with alcohol addiction date back to the early 2000s during his time on *Unreal Tournament*. He candidly admitted, “The Gears of War trilogy was largely developed hungover by me. I was, at that point, a functioning alcoholic.” However, as his addiction progressed, he transitioned to being “a non-functioning alcoholic.”

The pressures of the gaming industry, characterized by events like GDC and E3, exacerbated his situation. Bleszinski described the culture of excessive drinking at industry parties and hotel bars, stating, “My tolerance was so high that other developers would have a few, and I would get all of this confidential information and remember it. It was almost like my superpower for a while.” This temporary advantage, however, came at a significant personal cost.

The closure of *LawBreakers* and Boss Key Productions—a studio he co-founded with Arjan Brussee—was a devastating blow for Bleszinski. He has a detailed list of decisions he believes contributed to the studio’s failure, including the missed opportunity to collaborate with Gears co-creator Rod Fergusson. Reflecting on the aftermath, he described the day he had to inform his team that they were closing as “one of the hardest days of my life.”

In the wake of Boss Key’s closure, Bleszinski hit a low point, struggling to find motivation. However, his journey towards recovery has reignited his passion for game development. While he considers returning, he emphasizes a departure from competitive PvP titles, expressing a preference for Player vs. Environment (PvE) games. He believes the simplicity of co-op gaming, where players can team up and engage in shared experiences, remains a significant draw for audiences.

As Bleszinski moves forward, his story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of addressing mental health and addiction. His commitment to maintaining a healthier lifestyle is encouraging, and whether he decides to create new games or not, his journey is one marked by hope and personal growth in the face of adversity.
