Unique Dishes Sampled at This Year's Canadian National Exhibition

# CNE 2023: A Gastronomic Exploration of Unusual Treats

The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is celebrated for its lively ambiance, exhilarating attractions, and, arguably most importantly, its distinctive food selections. This year, however, visitors observed a change. With ongoing urban growth and a constricted fairground space, the midway seemed more compact and possibly more centered around food than in previous years. With fewer amusements competing for attention, attendees appeared drawn to the food trucks, each striving to surpass the others with ever more inventive culinary creations.

## A Culinary Expedition Commences

As someone who proudly enjoys carnival cuisine, this year’s adventure inspired an investigation into some of the bolder food options offered at the fair. Despite having a skeptical attitude towards “stunt foods,” the need to find excitement in a reduced selection of entertainment lured me in.

### Sweet Corn Wasabi Lemonade

The day commenced with an ambitious pick: Sweet Corn Wasabi Lemonade. This drink deviated significantly from assumptions, delivering a lackluster blend of flavors that did not come together. The dense consistency, reminiscent of soup, did not improve the experience, resulting in a beverage that was less than invigorating and ultimately disappointing.

### Footlong Butter Chicken Taquitos

In stark contrast to the initial experience, the Footlong Butter Chicken Taquitos proved to be a delightful revelation. The enthusiasm expressed by my family member was justified, as these substantial snacks brought a taste of the familiar convenience store favorite with a fair spin. Yet, while pleasurable, they missed a strong spice that could have elevated the dish to its fullest potential.

### Pulled Pork Beef Patty Sandwich

This item was perhaps the highlight of the day: a Pulled Pork Beef Patty Sandwich that masterfully merged tender pulled pork with Jamaican beef patties. The inclusion of slaw contributed texture and flavor, resulting in a satisfying mix that made it easy to envision enjoying regularly if it were available nearby.

### Deep Fried Lobster Tail

Among the more extravagant options, the Deep Fried Lobster Tail turned out to be more traditional than anticipated but was executed exceptionally well. Juicy and perfectly cooked, it was complemented by a light sprinkle of Old Bay seasoning, surpassing the usual carnival food offerings.

### Beef Patty Pierogies

Regrettably, the expectations surrounding the Beef Patty Pierogies led to disillusionment. This dish, a fusion of two cherished culinary styles, arrived dry and stale, ultimately failing to deliver. Its preparation fell short, not doing justice to either comfort food tradition.

### Ice Cream Marshmallow S’more Oreo Crusted Deep Fried Chicken Sandwich

Perhaps the most debated dish sampled was the Ice Cream Marshmallow S’more Oreo Crusted Deep Fried Chicken Sandwich. Defying logic, this seemingly chaotic mixture surprisingly worked, uniting the savory elements of fried chicken with sweet ice cream and an Oreo crust. It presented an intriguing culinary experiment, guiding the palate into unknown realms.

### The Humble Peameal

To conclude the day’s gastronomic journeys, nothing could be more quintessential than the classic Peameal Bacon sandwich. With just a simple dab of mustard, it captured the essence of comfort food. Relishing this traditional delight while gazing across the scenic fairground wrapped up the experience on a high note.

## Looking Forward

As the CNE continues to evolve amidst urban changes and fluctuating culinary trends, it is evident that food has emerged as a centerpiece of the fair. With each visit unveiling new creations and at times puzzling choices, the excitement for next year’s offerings intensifies. Whether they will showcase culinary brilliance or whimsical extravagance remains to be seen, but one fact is clear: the CNE continues to be a cornerstone for gastronomes and thrill enthusiasts alike.
