**Double Fine Regains Independence: A New Era for the Studio**
Earlier this week, Compulsion Games announced they successfully reclaimed the publishing rights to all their games. This is a significant milestone, especially amidst the ongoing Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against Microsoft and Xbox. Following this trend, Double Fine Productions, the studio behind the acclaimed game Psychonauts, has also confirmed they now own the publishing rights to their entire catalog.
In a recent appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer shared, “The transfer of the IP came back to us. We have the publishing rights back to our games. It still says ‘Microsoft’ on some of them, but it just takes a while for it all to process.” He emphasized that purchasing Double Fine’s games directly supports the studio, allowing them to reinvest into future projects.
In addition to regaining control over their games, Double Fine is reviving their signature Amnesia Fortnight Game Jam. This unique event allows team members to break into small groups and create a game within two weeks. Schafer expressed enthusiasm about returning to such projects now that the studio is independent again, highlighting the importance of game jams for fostering creativity.
To fund this revival, Double Fine is launching a Kickstarter campaign for the Amnesia Fortnight Game Jam, which begins on August 31st. By joining the Kickstarter, backers will not only support the initiative but will also have the opportunity to vote on game pitches presented by Double Fine employees. The campaign aims to engage fans in the creative process, with plans to develop several games based on backer votes.
Despite these positive developments, it’s important to note that this announcement follows a difficult period for Double Fine, including the recent layoff of 25% of their staff as a direct consequence of their independence from Xbox. This situation underscores the challenges that come with transitioning back to being an independent studio. The hope remains that those affected by the layoffs find new opportunities while the remaining team at Double Fine continues to navigate this new chapter.
As Double Fine embraces its independent future, fans are eagerly anticipating both the revival of beloved initiatives like Amnesia Fortnight and the prospect of fresh game releases that reflect the studio’s unique creative vision.
