Bungie Contemplates Subletting Portions of Its 210,984 Sq. Ft. Studio After Terminating More Than 600 Employees in Three Years

Bungie, the well-known game development company celebrated for its successful franchise Destiny, has encountered a notable transformation in its operational environment lately. Located in the high-priced real estate area of Bellevue, Washington, Bungie increased its office size in 2021, doubling its footprint due to the initial backing of Destiny 2’s success during the pandemic. Yet, this expansion is now perceived by many as an error, particularly as the studio has recently started looking into options to sublease substantial parts of its space following a series of layoffs amid worsening fortunes.

As stated by a representative from Bungie, “Bungie is looking into options to sublease its campus in Bellevue, Washington.” This choice arises as the studio has shifted to a digital-first approach, mirroring changing workplace dynamics and the efficacy of remote collaboration. Despite this transition, Bungie confirmed that it will continue to uphold a physical office presence in Bellevue.

Bungie’s headquarters, characterized as cutting-edge, includes amenities like a dedicated fitness area, a climbing wall, and testing spaces. Reports highlight additional facilities for motion capture, streaming, audio recording, and editing, demonstrating the studio’s dedication to supporting its development teams. However, this extensive setup was part of a larger initiative aimed at boosting Bungie’s commitment to the long-term development of Destiny 2, along with exploring new intellectual properties.

The acquisition of Bungie by Sony for $3.6 billion was accompanied by a vision for cross-media achievement and diversification of Bungie’s portfolio beyond Destiny. Unfortunately, after four years, many of these initiatives have not produced the anticipated outcomes. Particularly, Bungie’s attempts to create new games outside of the Destiny realm have been largely hindered, with a number of these projects either canceled or integrated into PlayStation’s broader strategies.

At its zenith, Bungie boasted a workforce exceeding 1,500 employees. However, subsequent layoffs in 2023, 2024, and 2026 have diminished staff by at least 600, signifying a considerable drop in personnel. The current estimate of the studio’s size stands at around 500 employees.

The transition to a “digital first” workplace is viewed as a strategically wise decision, particularly in attracting talent without the limitations of the costly Seattle job market. Nonetheless, it raises concerns about the foresight regarding the extensive expansion of its physical headquarters at a time when remote work gained prominence. As Bungie maneuvers through these transitions, the industry will be closely watching how it adjusts to the challenges of sustaining a successful game development studio in a swiftly changing market.
