The final hearing in the legal dispute between a group of former Rockstar Games employees and the studio behind the highly anticipated GTA 6 is set to commence on September 10th, with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) representing the dismissed staff. A rally organized by the IWGB will take place outside the Glasgow Tribunals Centre at 8:30 AM on the opening day.
The controversy began last November when 34 former employees were terminated. Reports suggest that the dismissals stemmed from discussions about a new company Slack policy within a union-operated Discord server. Rockstar accused the employees of leaking “confidential information on a public forum,” while the IWGB claimed that the studio was engaged in union-busting activities. Earlier this year, an employment tribunal ruled that the fired workers could pursue claims of blacklisting against Rockstar, asserting that the actions were retaliatory due to their union involvement.
The hearing is expected to last until at least October 15th, during which the former staff will make their case against Rockstar. Jason Lewis, an IWGB member and former Rockstar employee, expressed the emotional toll of the situation, stating, “We lost our jobs, our income, our community and the chance to see the game through to release after spending years helping to build it.” He emphasized the importance of their fight for justice, not only for themselves but also as a message against employer retaliation for union activities.
Supporters of the fired developers are encouraged to buy union-branded merchandise to assist in their legal efforts rather than calling for a boycott of GTA 6. Proceeds from these sales will contribute to their “Fighting Fund.” In parallel, remaining employees at Rockstar have formed the Rockstar Games Workers Union and are seeking recognition from the company ahead of the planned GTA 6 release on November 19th.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case highlights broader issues regarding labor rights, unionization, and the treatment of workers within the gaming industry. The outcome could set significant precedents not just for Rockstar but for the industry as a whole.
