The reveal of Diablo 5 at BlizzCon over the weekend was one of the standout moments of the fan event. Blizzard disclosed a surprising amount of information about a game that is still in its early phases, and set to launch in three years.
Inevitably, comparisons to Diablo 4 arise, particularly given how distinct Diablo 4 is from its predecessors – essentially, Diablo 4 presents itself as an ARPG with an MMO façade.
So, should we anticipate Diablo 5 to emulate Diablo 4’s model? Blizzard remains somewhat vague. Senior game director Joe Shely mentioned in a press interview at BlizzCon (via PC Gamer) that Diablo 5 will indeed facilitate multiplayer gameplay, while also being available for solo play.
“Similar to Diablo 4, it is a game that you can engage in solo or multiplayer at your discretion, and you should be able to enjoy all content with friends,” stated Joe Shely.
Regarding the architecture of the multiplayer experience, Blizzard noted that specifics will be disclosed closer to Diablo 5’s launch in 2029. How the game manages multiplayer and co-op is a significant point of discussion due to a key returning element: the procedurally-generated world.
As confirmed during BlizzCon, Diablo 5 is reintroducing Diablo 3’s procedural generation technology, which alters the layouts of dungeons each time they are entered. This also applies to the overworld, with Blizzard highlighting that areas will change with each visit.
In essence, every player could potentially encounter a different instance of Sanctuary. This choice may complicate Diablo 5’s ability to adopt Diablo 4’s MMO-lite approach to multiplayer, but we are merely speculating.
It is also important to note that Diablo 5 will not be reintroducing towns, which traditionally serve as hubs for players to gather and regroup between quests. Instead, Diablo 5 narrates the tale of a caravan of solitary survivors navigating through Sanctuary, potentially making player interaction more difficult.
Blizzard has committed to begin sharing ongoing Diablo 5 development updates sometime in 2027. Furthermore, the developer has expressed a willingness to consider feedback, so some elements shared could differ by the time of release.
