**Discord Implements Revised Global Age Verification System**
Discord has rolled out a revised global age verification system designed to improve user safety and privacy. This update comes after the company initially delayed the deployment of its previous age verification system, which faced significant privacy-related backlash earlier this year.
In a blog post by Discord’s Chief Technology Officer, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the new system is outlined to rely heavily on automatic age estimation based on account signals rather than requiring users to submit facial recognition data or identification documents. Vishnevskiy stated, “We’ll automatically place you in an age group using account signals, like how long your account has existed and the kinds of servers you’re part of.” This method aims to determine age groups with an accuracy level comparable to biometric systems, without requiring a single server’s input or analyzing user-generated messages or calls.
The three age groups identified by this system are adult (no restrictions), teen (some restrictions), and unconfirmed (also with restrictions). Users can check their designated age group through the account status section in their user settings.
For those needing to prove their age manually, Discord has broadened the options available. Users can now verify their age using methods such as credit card verification via Stripe, Google Wallet’s ID pass, a reusable age credential called AgeKey, or by allowing the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to share their logged age range. These alternatives are intended to accommodate various user preferences and comfort levels regarding data privacy. Vishnevskiy assured users that the data provided would only be used for age group determination.
In response to ongoing concerns about data privacy and the workings of the age verification system, Discord has published extensive documentation detailing its third-party age assurance vendors, the functionality of its age estimation model, guidelines for spoiler tag channels without age restrictions, and transparency reports regarding age assurance impacts on users.
Vishnevskiy emphasized the importance of a global, privacy-conscious approach to age verification, stating, “By launching a global approach with non-biometric options, we’re getting ahead of laws that might ask us to implement something less privacy-focused.” He called on users to engage in discussions that shape future policy decisions affecting teen safety and privacy on online platforms.
As Discord moves forward with this revised system, it remains to be seen whether these additional verification options and increased transparency will mitigate potential criticism and prevent further delays in implementation.
