Massive Entertainment Takes Charge of Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, Expands to Develop New Ubisoft Dieselpunk MOBA

**Massive Entertainment Expands Its Role within Ubisoft, Takes Charge of Major Franchises**

Tom Clancy’s The Division and Star Wars Outlaws studio Massive Entertainment is experiencing significant growth following recent announcements from parent company Ubisoft. The studio has now been designated as the “global label” for several major franchises, including Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell, in addition to launching a new original game titled World War fantasy MOBA March of Giants.

This restructuring is part of Ubisoft’s ongoing organizational changes into distinct “creative houses” after a substantial funding boost from Tencent in March 2025. This investment was aimed at enhancing certain flagship franchises, such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, which Ubisoft identifies as their most valuable assets.

The changes, however, have not been without controversy. The restructuring process has led to mass layoffs, studio closures, and project cancellations. Workers in creative houses not backed by Tencent have found themselves under increasing pressure. Earlier this year, Ubisoft employees staged a strike to protest the significant cutbacks and changes to return-to-office policies that threatened job security.

As of today, Massive Entertainment is leading the direction of the former “creative house 2” under the leadership of Christoph Hartmann, who was hired as general manager after a career at Amazon and 2K. While it remains uncertain how these changes will affect the developers involved, Ubisoft has yet to announce further layoffs in conjunction with this reorganization.

A press release from Ubisoft stated, “Starting today, development teams responsible for these franchises in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto will operate under the Massive Entertainment brand, bringing together their creative and technology expertise to shape its future, grow these franchises, and craft challenging experiences for dedicated player communities.”

Regarding ongoing projects, Ubisoft Toronto is reportedly in the process of developing a remake of the original Splinter Cell, despite recent staff reductions amounting to a 40-person cut from the team. The studio has affirmed that the remake remains active. Additionally, Ubisoft has confirmed that a new Ghost Recon installment is on the horizon.

The newly announced March of Giants is described as a 4v4 battle experience where each player assumes the role of a giant, leading vast numbers of computer-controlled NPCs, also known as creeps, into combat. While the game features a distinctive dieselpunk aesthetic, initial impressions of its mechanics have been met with skepticism. However, the studio is currently accepting applications for playtests, and the game’s full potential awaits revelation.

As Massive Entertainment embarks on this ambitious phase, the gaming community is keenly following these developments, anticipating how this restructuring will shape the future of these beloved franchises.
