Paradox Interactive has announced the next round of expansions for the popular medieval strategy game Crusader Kings III, which will form part of its fifth chapter of add-ons. The two major downloadable content (DLC) packages, titled By God Alone and Silk & Silver, introduce new gameplay mechanics and ruler types, allowing players to immerse themselves in the roles of theocratic leaders and wealthy republican merchants.
The first expansion, By God Alone, is set to be released between July and September. This DLC significantly overhauls the game’s religious systems, with a particular focus on Christianity. Players will have the opportunity to assume the role of the Pope and manage playable theocracies, along with a variety of religion-specific challenges that add depth to the overall gameplay experience. For those starting their campaign in 867, they will encounter the “Great Schism” between Western Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, a key historical event that shapes their gaming experience.
Throughout their playthroughs, every Christian realm will face an evolving “Christian situation,” allowing for shifts in tenets, beliefs, and heresies. Additionally, the new Spiritual Fulfillment system enhances character interactions with faith, influencing stress levels and prompting deeper questions about one’s moral standing and relationship with the divine. Players in the role of theocratic rulers will have unique tasks, such as establishing monastic orders, managing holy sites, and even puppeting clerical characters to navigate the church’s political landscape.
The second DLC, Silk & Silver, is anticipated to drop between October and the end of the year. This expansion introduces merchant republics, where players can lead affluent families with vast wealth. The gameplay leans towards a simulation of medieval capitalism, with trading companies competing for dominance through trade routes and monopolistic practices. Merchant republics will require players to draft constitutions, form alliances, and establish leagues, akin to the dynamics witnessed in northern Italy during the historical period represented in Crusader Kings III.
In addition to these major expansions, two smaller DLCs are currently available: Symbols of Authority, a clothing pack featuring new crowns, and Songs of the Realm, which enhances the game’s soundtrack with additional music tracks.
Players interested in all four DLCs can purchase the Crusader Kings III: Chapter V bundle for £37 / $44 / €44, with individual prices for By God Alone and Silk & Silver yet to be disclosed. For context, the previous year’s larger expansion, All Under Heaven, was priced at £25. Furthermore, Paradox offers a DLC subscription service that allows players to access add-ons more flexibly.
Additionally, a free update (version 1.19) has been released, bringing a set of new features and improvements to the base game, providing players with even more content to explore.
