Hasbro Terminates Star Wars Jedi Director's Dungeons & Dragons Game One Year Following Announcement

Approximately 351 days ago, Hasbro and Giant Skull, a studio established by Stig Asmussen, the director of *Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order*, revealed a new single-player action-adventure game situated in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. However, this highly anticipated title has been canceled less than a year following its announcement.

On May 19, Bloomberg disclosed that Hasbro had ended its publishing deal with Giant Skull. Earlier this year, the game under development at Giant Skull was also axed. A representative for Wizards of the Coast, a Hasbro subsidiary, mentioned, “We evaluate concepts at each phase of development. While we opted not to move forward with an initial concept from Giant Skull, we hold great admiration for Stig Asmussen and his team and appreciate our continuing partnership.” In spite of this setback, Hasbro remains open to proposals from Giant Skull.

Stig Asmussen boasts an impressive history in game development, having formerly acted as the game director for *Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order* and its sequel, *Jedi: Survivor*. His credentials also comprise roles as the game director for *God of War III* and art director for *God of War II* at Sony Santa Monica.

Asmussen conveyed his enjoyment in working with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. He indicated that Giant Skull is presently in talks with Hasbro and other organizations concerning potential new publishing agreements, asserting, “Things are good at Giant Skull.”

Wizards of the Coast has been progressively increasing its investment in video games in recent years. In 2024, Eugene Evans, the senior vice president of digital strategy and licensing at WotC, disclosed that the company had over 40 video game projects at various points of development or production with both internal and external studios. Nevertheless, Hasbro and WotC have been executing cost-reduction strategies across the enterprise, including downsizing their ambitious video game plans. In February, Hasbro shut down Atomic Arcade, an internal studio focused on a *G.I. Joe* game. The discontinuation of the Dungeons & Dragons game is especially surprising given the rising popularity of the franchise.

As of now, *Exodus*, another major upcoming title, is still slated for a 2027 release. This ambitious sci-fi project has drawn parallels to the *Mass Effect* series, indicating it may appeal to fans eager for a fresh entry in that genre.
