Hasbro has officially canceled the publishing of the Dungeons and Dragons action game developed by Giant Skull, a studio led by former Star Wars Jedi series director Stig Asmussen. The decision to pull the project was made earlier this year, leaving the Giant Skull team in search of a new publishing deal.
A Hasbro spokesperson confirmed the cancellation, stating, “While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.” Despite the setback, Asmussen reassured that things remain positive at Giant Skull, as they continue discussions with Wizards of the Coast and other potential partners to secure new publishing opportunities.
The abrupt cancellation is particularly notable as it follows less than a year after the game’s announcement, which had initially been met with enthusiasm. John Hight, president of digital gaming at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, had previously expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting Asmussen’s artistry and the team’s suitability for creating a new Dungeons and Dragons experience centered on worldbuilding and storytelling.
Giant Skull’s vision for the game focused on crafting a rich Dungeons & Dragons universe encompassing immersive narratives, heroic combat, and compelling traversal mechanics. However, with this project now shelved, the studio faces uncertainty in its next steps.
On a more optimistic note, Hasbro still has other Dungeons and Dragons projects in the pipeline. Invoke Studios is working on “Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons,” a singleplayer action-adventure game centered on a character named Kaatri, who makes a pact to gain otherworldly powers. This game was announced during the previous year’s Game Awards and is slated for a 2027 release.
Additionally, another project, “Exodus,” previously led by ex-BioWare developer James Ohlen, is also in development with a target release in 2027. This game has been described as similar to the Mass Effect series.
As the landscape of Dungeons and Dragons video games continues to evolve, fans and industry observers alike will be watching closely to see how Asmussen and Giant Skull navigate the challenges ahead and what new projects might emerge from their creative endeavors.
