### 1666: Amsterdam – A New Era for Patrice Désilets’ Vision
Original Assassin’s Creed creative director Patrice Désilets and his team at Panache Digital Games have officially reintroduced “1666: Amsterdam,” a supernatural history game that has a storied past. Once developed under THQ Montreal, the project faced an uncertain future following the company’s bankruptcy in 2013. Following various twists and turns within the gaming industry, Panache Digital Games now reclaims this ambitious project, launching a 30-minute prologue available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with early access slated for later this year.
#### A Troubled History
Désilets joined THQ Montreal in 2011, aligning his creative prowess with the Amsterdam project. However, THQ’s financial collapse two years later jeopardized numerous game developments. In the aftermath, Ubisoft acquired the Montreal studio but dismissed Désilets after negotiations to retain him fell through. Consequently, 1666: Amsterdam was put on hold as Désilets moved on to establish Panache Digital Games in 2014. Ultimately, he successfully regained the creative rights to the Amsterdam project in 2016, signaling his intent to pursue the game’s development once more.
#### The Game’s Synopsis
At its core, “1666: Amsterdam” is described as a dark third-person action-adventure game, featuring a protagonist named Noa Brooklyn. As a “Collector,” Noa finds herself navigating a city populated by entities known as Originals, who have existed alongside humans for centuries, wielding incredible powers. Complicating matters, a group known as the Zaindaris appears to be allied with Noa, while a mysterious figure named Aaron, who perceives the world through a cat’s eyes and hails from the year 1999, plays a significant role.
The narrative explores a complex interplay of time and influence, with one segment unfolding in the present day. As the game proceeds, players are prompted to understand the cyclical nature of the story, an assertion amplified by the promotional materials.
#### Prologue Experience
The prologue presents players with the opportunity to step into Noa’s shoes as she embraces her destiny as the Collector. Here, players will select a Companion and begin to traverse a universe shaped by unseen influences across time. It sets the stage for a deeper exploration of themes and character relationships pivotal to the full game.
Désilets proudly expressed the team’s commitment to crafting a focused, playable experience over the past six years. “No fake footage, no vertical slices, just a playable experience evolving build after build,” he notes. He also characterizes the prologue as “an amuse-bouche before a nine-course dinner,” indicating the ambitious experience planned for the finished product.
#### The Future of 1666: Amsterdam
Panache Digital Games, previously recognized for “Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey,” aims to elevate its storytelling and gameplay design with “1666: Amsterdam.” The transition from a troubled history to a new beginning raises hopeful expectations for both critics and players alike. Fans of Désilets are eagerly anticipating what could prove to be a significant title reflecting years of development and creative evolution.
As the game progresses towards its full release, all eyes remain on how “1666: Amsterdam” will reshape narratives within the gaming landscape, continuing the legacy of its celebrated creator.
