Programmers are Creating an 8-bit Cuphead Game in Assembly Language for the Sega Master System

At the recent Summer Game Fest event, it was revealed that Studio MDHR is working on two new Cuphead titles. One of these is a hand-animated follow-up to the original 2017 sidescroller, recognized for its homage to golden age cartoons. The other game, titled “Mighty Cuphead Adventure,” is a retro 8-bit action platformer.

What distinguishes “Mighty Cuphead Adventure” is its creation using assembly language—a low-level programming language—tailored to the Sega Master System’s specifications, an 8-bit console from the mid-1980s. Although designed for modern consoles and PC, players will have a distinctive chance to enjoy the game on a physical cartridge that works with the Sega Master System.

This strategy reflects Studio MDHR’s commitment to traditional animation methods, as shown previously with Cuphead’s aesthetics inspired by the 1930s. Further details about “Mighty Cuphead Adventure” will be provided in the coming months as development continues.
