### Maximum Thunderness: A Cartoony Roguelike Shooter Experience
A mass of flailing fingers flop against my desk as I struggle to play the cartoony roguelike shooter **Maximum Thunderness**. Attempting to navigate its demo using a controller while simultaneously managing mouse and keyboard controls to experience its co-op element with skateboarding aliens is proving to be a challenge.
Developed by **Berzerk Studio**, known for their work on the musical bullet hell game **Just Shapes & Beats**, Maximum Thunderness successfully generates excitement with its energetic presentation, reminiscent of a Saturday morning superhero cartoon on a sugar high. Beneath the flashy exterior, it mimics classic action roguelikes similar to **Hades 2**.
The core gameplay involves navigating runs compressed into brief bursts along sections of highway, which function as chambers filled with battles against various foes, from smaller creatures to formidable bosses. You play as **Krash Nitro**, a jetpack-wearing mute space ranger, facing off against hulking green invaders and odd bogey-shaped blobs. Their threat level escalates, especially when some of them ride skateboards, adding a whimsical yet serious challenge.
The game is designed for one to three players, but my decision to control two characters simultaneously led to complications. When played as intended, Krash Nitro can swiftly maneuver around the screen, dodging enemy attacks and launching counterattacks with blasters. A timed reload mechanic requires players to efficiently time their shots, adding a layer of strategy to the action. Following each cleared chamber, players can select one of three cards to enhance their abilities. These upgrades include various health boosts, critical hit chances, and unique transformations, such as turning Krash into a cyborg, which balances health trade-offs effectively.
However, the co-op dynamics shine through especially when a player is downed mid-battle, requiring their partner to sacrifice health for resurrection. My attempts to manage both Krash characters saw one fall due to my inability to multitask effectively, leaving me with no choice but to conclude that a solo approach may be the most feasible.
As for its potential impact in the crowded roguelike genre upon its anticipated release in autumn 2026, it’s unclear whether Maximum Thunderness can establish a distinct identity. The vibrant theming and engaging battles capture interest, but the world-building and narrative depth may not yet measure up to heavyweights like Hades 2 or the more tactical experiences of games like **Mewgenics**.
For those eager to try it out themselves, the demo for Maximum Thunderness is available on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1037170/Maximum_Thunderness/), where players can also add the game to their wishlist for future updates.
