AdHoc has rolled out an update for their comedic superhero office game, Dispatch, on the Nintendo Switch, responding to previous contentious censorship demands imposed by Nintendo.
Upon Dispatch’s release on Nintendo, numerous players were taken aback to discover that the game had undergone considerable censorship, with characters’ nipples and genitals concealed by black boxes and sexual sounds muted. AdHoc promptly recognized fan discontent and signaled their partnership with Nintendo for an encouraging resolution.
The outcome is Dispatch’s “HR Violations Pack,” ready for download in territories such as Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. This downloadable content empowers Switch players to choose whether they want to see the game’s complete range of “breasts, butts, and birds” (i.e., indecent gestures).
Nonetheless, Nintendo’s “strict requirements” remain in effect, indicating that sexual sounds continue to be toned down and visible representations of genitals remain limited. AdHoc has crafted more creative censorship alternatives, allowing players to utilize an “elegant mosaic, classic black bars, or total chaos” to conceal specific areas. Opting for chaos may lead to cover-ups involving denim hot pants or a jam-filled donut.
Players on Steam or PS5 will also have access to these new censorship features while retaining Uncensored as the default. Xbox players can look forward to similar choices when Dispatch debuts there this summer.
Despite the initial criticism, Dispatch has proven to be an impressive triumph for AdHoc, with over 1 million copies sold within ten days of its launch last year. This achievement has encouraged the studio to ponder creating a second season, potentially featuring more explicit scenes, in light of the positive reception of the first.
