Wizards of the Coast President Steps Down After Two Years in Role

**John Hight Steps Down as President of Wizards of the Coast**

John Hight, the president of Wizards of the Coast (WOTC), is set to step down from his position effective September 1, 2024, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. A filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on July 27 confirmed Hight’s transition into an advisory role within the company, although he will not be leaving WOTC entirely.

Hight’s departure comes approximately two years after he assumed the presidency in August 2022, during a challenging time for the company and its parent organization, Hasbro. Recently, Hasbro announced a $56 million impairment charge resulting from the cancellation of several anticipated games slated for release in 2028 and beyond.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, a WOTC representative expressed gratitude for Hight’s contributions: “After two years as President of Wizards of the Coast, John Hight is transitioning from the role, effective September 1. We’re deeply grateful for his leadership and the contributions he’s made to our teams and our games during his tenure. John will continue to support Wizards in an advisory capacity while pursuing other creative and professional opportunities he’s passionate about.”

Wizards of the Coast emphasized that there would be “no change to the strength of the Wizards business,” asserting that their flagship franchises, Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, continue to perform well while maintaining a robust video game development pipeline for 2027, which includes titles such as Exodus and Warlock. The company has initiated both internal and external searches for Hight’s successor.

This leadership shift occurs amid significant developments within the company, particularly regarding employee relations. Earlier in the year, the development team behind Magic: The Gathering Arena made headlines by forming a union in collaboration with the Communications Workers of America. Despite initial communication challenges with WOTC following the union’s formation, the team, now known as United Wizards of the Coast, officially elected their union in June, following advocacy for recognition and better working conditions.

The evolving dynamics at Wizards of the Coast may represent a critical juncture for the company as it navigates both internal challenges and the broader landscape of the gaming industry. As John Hight transitions to an advisory role, the organization looks to maintain its momentum while seeking new leadership to guide the next chapter of its storied legacy.
