Valve’s Response to ESRB Restrictions: The Leaking of Left 4 Dead 2’s Cinematic Trailer

My only experience of Left 4 Dead 2 is a handful of sessions in my youth where a friend handed me a controller (me, a person whose shooter experience extended to Ratchet and Clank at the time), told me nothing, and let the chaos unfold. I did not do a good job. But it left a lasting impression! Though perhaps that impression would have changed had I seen its cinematic trailer as soon as Valve had wanted to release it. The problem was, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board weren’t so hot on the game, including its marketing materials, so that left Valve with one option: leaking the trailer themselves.

Stern Introduces Fallout-Inspired Pinball Machine After Pokémon Debut

**Stern Pinball Introduces Fallout Pinball Machine: A Journey Through a Post-Apocalyptic Realm Awaits**

Six months after launching their Pokémon-themed pinball machine, Stern Pinball has once more unlocked the vault, this time showcasing their newest creation: a pinball version of the legendary video game franchise, Fallout. Taking cues from both the classic games and the well-received live-action Amazon Prime series, this new machine offers a remarkable blend of nostalgia and interactive fun.

Set against the backdrop of Fallout’s treacherous wastelands, players will assume the role of an unsuspecting vault dweller traversing an irradiated environment teeming with various dangers, including ghouls, raiders, and the terrifying Deathclaws. The machine features a striking design, complete with a sculpted Deathclaw, a spinning Nuka-Cola cap, a moving Vault 33 door, and an operational PIP-Boy alongside a Fat Man launcher to annihilate targets on the upper playfield.

The design of the Fallout pinball machine heavily draws from the storyline aspects of Amazon Prime’s two-season adaptation, featuring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins. The machine integrates original voice recordings by one of the show’s co-stars, Johnny Pemberton, amplifying the immersive experience. Additionally, aficionados of Fallout 4 will spot familiar components, especially the V.A.T.S. targeting system. Stern’s Vice President, George Gomez, mentioned that the project benefited from crucial insights from Bethesda’s Todd Howard, connecting the game developers and the pinball creators.

Stern Pinball will present the Fallout machine in three distinct variations: Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition, catering to a range of budgets and preferences. The base model commences at $7,299 USD, encouraging fans to gather their Nuka caps for this thrilling addition to their inventory. The machine was crafted by Keith Elwin, known for his contributions to other beloved tables like Jurassic Park, Jaws, and King Kong.

Historically, physical machines themed around video game franchises have been limited. Prior to the release of Pokémon earlier this year, only a few Super Mario tables and a RollerCoaster Tycoon machine stood out as notable exceptions. Stern Pinball has remained one of the few companies to survive the arcade decline of the early 2000s, making a triumphant return with releases themed around classic rock and Marvel franchises, ushering in a new era of game-oriented machines. This evolution resonates with millennial nostalgia, as highlighted by the recent launch of Jersey Jack’s Sonic the Hedgehog pinball machine.

The Fallout pinball machine made its first public appearance at PAX West, captivating fans and gamers alike with its enthralling gameplay and rich thematic elements. As Stern continues to innovate and draw inspiration from cherished franchises, the horizon for pinball appears brighter than ever.

It’s been a couple of months since Double Fine parted ways from Xbox, and they’ve been busy getting to work since that split. Granblue Fantasy Relink Company Introduces New Publishing Division Aimed at Expedited Launch of Indie Games

**Cygames Edge: A Fresh Chapter for Cygames and Its Emphasis on Smaller Games**

Cygames, a notable entity in the gaming realm, has attracted attention for its successful titles such as *Umamusume: Pretty Derby* and *Granblue Fantasy Relink*. Nonetheless, the company has encountered obstacles, particularly significant delays in the launch of multiple games as they aim for excellence. To ease these burdens and concentrate on more feasible projects, Cygames has introduced a new label named Cygames Edge. This initiative is committed to nurturing small and medium-sized internally developed titles, with *Where the Seeds Fall* being its first venture.

### The Background of Delays

*Granblue Fantasy Relink* serves as a prominent instance of Cygames’ extended development timelines, having transitioned from PlatinumGames and moving to in-house development. Initially revealed in the summer of 2016, it is set to release eight years later in 2024, with an expansion already on the horizon. Other initiatives like *Project Awakening* and *Garnet Arena: Mages of Magicary*, disclosed in 2016 and 2021 respectively, have similarly faced prolonged periods of inactivity, leaving fans to ponder their status, despite reassurances from the firm.

### Cygames Edge: Adopting a Fresh Perspective

Unlike the AAA projects that have defined Cygames’ catalog, Cygames Edge seeks to nurture smaller games developed by streamlined teams, encouraging a consistent release schedule for distinctive titles. The inaugural project, *Where the Seeds Fall*, embodies this approach by providing a brief three-hour action-adventure platformer experience, where players embark on an exploration of a colossal tree. Promising replay value, the game incorporates additional modes, including a time trial specifically crafted for speedrunners.

Cygames Edge shares resemblances with initiatives at other Japanese developers, such as GYAAR Studio under Bandai Namco. This framework allows developers to engage in self-contained projects, sharpening their skills without the burden of large-scale production demands. Partnering with ZEREO Inc., Cygames is positioning itself to delve into inventive pathways through this new label.

### Community Involvement and Future Aspirations

Cygames has already commenced the promotion of Cygames Edge, as demonstrated by the label’s marketing efforts on social media, championing the tagline “Stay on the edge.” The emphasis is on delivering unique and varied titles that resonate with players worldwide. Underlining its dedication, *Where the Seeds Fall* was showcased during Sony’s recent State of Play, announcing a digital release across Steam, PS5, and Switch 2 set for November 5th.

In alignment with this small experimental strategy, Cygames Edge marks a pivotal change in how Cygames plans to function in the future. The triumph of its initial project will establish a benchmark for what lies ahead, with the company eager to uncover new possibilities in the ever-evolving gaming landscape. With excitement brewing for Cygames Edge’s advancements, both fans and gamers are observing attentively as the label aims to reshape the company’s gaming portfolio.

Bungie Contemplates Subletting Portions of Its 210,984 Sq. Ft. Studio After Terminating More Than 600 Employees in Three Years

Bungie, the well-known game development company celebrated for its successful franchise Destiny, has encountered a notable transformation in its operational environment lately. Located in the high-priced real estate area of Bellevue, Washington, Bungie increased its office size in 2021, doubling its footprint due to the initial backing of Destiny 2’s success during the pandemic. Yet, this expansion is now perceived by many as an error, particularly as the studio has recently started looking into options to sublease substantial parts of its space following a series of layoffs amid worsening fortunes.

As stated by a representative from Bungie, “Bungie is looking into options to sublease its campus in Bellevue, Washington.” This choice arises as the studio has shifted to a digital-first approach, mirroring changing workplace dynamics and the efficacy of remote collaboration. Despite this transition, Bungie confirmed that it will continue to uphold a physical office presence in Bellevue.

Bungie’s headquarters, characterized as cutting-edge, includes amenities like a dedicated fitness area, a climbing wall, and testing spaces. Reports highlight additional facilities for motion capture, streaming, audio recording, and editing, demonstrating the studio’s dedication to supporting its development teams. However, this extensive setup was part of a larger initiative aimed at boosting Bungie’s commitment to the long-term development of Destiny 2, along with exploring new intellectual properties.

The acquisition of Bungie by Sony for $3.6 billion was accompanied by a vision for cross-media achievement and diversification of Bungie’s portfolio beyond Destiny. Unfortunately, after four years, many of these initiatives have not produced the anticipated outcomes. Particularly, Bungie’s attempts to create new games outside of the Destiny realm have been largely hindered, with a number of these projects either canceled or integrated into PlayStation’s broader strategies.

At its zenith, Bungie boasted a workforce exceeding 1,500 employees. However, subsequent layoffs in 2023, 2024, and 2026 have diminished staff by at least 600, signifying a considerable drop in personnel. The current estimate of the studio’s size stands at around 500 employees.

The transition to a “digital first” workplace is viewed as a strategically wise decision, particularly in attracting talent without the limitations of the costly Seattle job market. Nonetheless, it raises concerns about the foresight regarding the extensive expansion of its physical headquarters at a time when remote work gained prominence. As Bungie maneuvers through these transitions, the industry will be closely watching how it adjusts to the challenges of sustaining a successful game development studio in a swiftly changing market.

Bruce Campbell, celebrated for his performances in cult favorites like *Evil Dead*, *Maniac Cop*, and the beloved series *Burn Notice*, recently shared a sobering health update with his loyal fanbase. Earlier this year, Campbell openly declared his plan to reduce his acting commitments after receiving a cancer diagnosis, a choice that has understandably weighed heavily on him and his fans.

In a recent guest spot on *The Adam Carolla Show*, Campbell disclosed that doctors have provided him with a prognosis of about five years to live. Without going into detail about the specific cancer type, Campbell noted, “I’m in a five-year prognosis. This is what the type of cancer that I have…is the current thing is a five-year deal.”

Last March, Campbell revealed that he would be stepping back from his iconic roles, including his cherished character Ash Williams from *Evil Dead*. He characterized his illness as “treatable” yet not “curable,” a harsh reality that he confronted while looking forward to the release of his new film, *Ernie and Emma*, which he not only starred in but also directed. The film, a heartfelt tale about a husband scattering his wife’s ashes, resonates with Campbell’s current life experiences deeply.

Despite the hurdles presented by his diagnosis, Campbell continues to embody resilience and humor in the entertainment sphere. He has established himself as a “schlock star,” a label he embraces, becoming synonymous with the horror genre. His career began with the role of Ashley Williams in the original *Evil Dead* trilogy, a performance celebrated across various media, including a multitude of video games and television adaptations. Campbell’s partnerships with director Sam Raimi have been significant, making cameo roles in nearly every Raimi project, including *Spider-Man* and *Xena: Warrior Princess*. His impact extends beyond horror, featuring memorable performances in Coen brothers films and enduring favorites such as *Bubba Ho-Tep*, *Maniac Cop*, and *The Adventures of Brisco County Jr*.

For numerous fans, Bruce Campbell represents a gateway into the world of horror and the enchantment of midnight movies. His vibrant presence in mainstream films has frequently been a reason for celebration among genre aficionados. His journey through the film landscape is poignantly chronicled in his 2001 autobiography, *If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor*, a beloved read for many who experienced the golden era of B-movies.

As Campbell confronts the unpredictable future that comes with a cancer diagnosis, he stresses his commitment to live life to the fullest. “I’ve decided pretty specifically to live with it,” he remarked, recognizing the psychological burden of receiving such transformative news. He openly shared his post-diagnosis adjustment, comparing it to “starting breakfast with a shit sandwich.” Still, he conveys that, despite the looming adversity, he is determined to continue his life. He emphasized, “You don’t die from cancer. You die from what cancer does to you,” highlighting his determination to keep a positive mindset.

At present, Campbell feels relatively well, asserting, “Right now, I’m between wax. I feel perfect.” His story embodies bravery in the face of hardship, and as fans persist in supporting him, his legacy in the film industry and the horror genre remains solidly intact.

Gamescom Issues Apology to Indie Developers for Victim-Blaming After Laptop Theft: Recognizes Effects and Absence of Prompt Assistance.

### Gamescom Theft Incident: A Call for Enhanced Security and Support

Last week, the yearly Gamescom convention encountered a serious setback as several exhibitors reported their booths were looted overnight. Among the most prominent victims was Ryan Laley, creator of the game *Mimic*, who conveyed a poignant message regarding the theft of his laptops during the event. The gaming community swiftly rallied around Laley, with a multitude of industry figures showing their support, including CD Projekt RED, renowned for creating *The Witcher 4*, who offered to replace the stolen items.

Conversely, Gamescom’s reaction to the incident faced backlash. The organizers remarked it was the exhibitors’ duty to protect their belongings against theft, even though security measures were in place at the event. This comment was perceived as dismissive, leading to criticism from the community and industry.

In response to the backlash, Gamescom issued a follow-up statement recognizing their error in tone and content. Posted on September 4, six days after the initial remarks, the new communication acknowledged the “justified” backlash and encouraged affected exhibitors to report thefts to both local law enforcement and event organizers. To address security concerns, Gamescom also announced plans to organize a roundtable with indie exhibitors to develop effective strategies to prevent future thefts.

The incident underscored the profound impact of such thefts, which extend beyond mere material loss. For many indie developers, the theft can obliterate months or years of hard work, threatening their projects and livelihoods. Gamescom’s latest statement highlighted the emotional distress such occurrences can impose on creators, undermining the experiences and opportunities at what is the world’s largest video game convention.

Despite the damage control efforts, the incident raises concerns about the sufficiency of security measures and the duties of event organizers in safeguarding their exhibitors. The swift response from the gaming community emphasized the solidarity within the industry, highlighting a readiness to support one another in times of need while reflecting a demand for accountability and improved protocols from event organizers.

Going forward, it remains uncertain whether Gamescom will undertake significant actions to bolster security and enhance the protection of its exhibitors. The industry is closely observing, as the outcome could affect the trust and safety perceptions surrounding one of the largest events in the gaming calendar.

Two Nintendo Direct Events Planned for Next Week

Nintendo has revealed two special Direct presentations set for next week, representing a pivotal moment for fans, especially those committed to The Legend of Zelda series. The first Direct will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Zelda, while the second will offer updates on forthcoming Switch 2 titles.

The Zelda-centric Direct is scheduled for September 8 at 7 a.m. Pacific / 10 a.m. Eastern and will run for about 30 minutes. This will be succeeded by a general Direct on September 9 at the same time, lasting roughly 45 minutes. Both presentations will be available for viewing on Nintendo’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

As excitement grows, fans are speculating on what the Zelda Direct may reveal. A major highlight could be the highly anticipated remake of Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, which many view as a probable centerpiece for the event. Furthermore, there’s a substantial chance that the Direct will showcase a trailer for the live-action Zelda film, scheduled to release on April 30. Although fans have only glimpsed a few images and behind-the-scenes photos, the anniversary celebration might provide an ideal occasion for Nintendo to unveil an official teaser for the movie.

Regarding future Zelda titles, it is anticipated that there will be no announcements concerning the next mainline game following Tears of the Kingdom. The interval between key releases indicates that a more extended development period is needed. While Breath of the Wild was hinted at just three years after Skyward Sword, the game development environment has evolved, suggesting that fans may have to wait longer for the next installment in Link’s journey.

The choice to spotlight The Legend of Zelda for its 40th anniversary underscores Nintendo’s acknowledgment of the franchise’s lasting impact. Although some former team members have suggested that Nintendo’s overall strategy for anniversaries is less focused on events compared to other franchises—like those from The Pokémon Company—this Zelda-themed direct may challenge that perception. With the assurance of thrilling announcements and the celebration of a cherished franchise, both Directs are set to deliver captivating content for gamers and fans alike.
