John and Brenda Romero Claim That the Present Video Game Industry Slump Exceeds the 1980s Economic Recession

John and Brenda Romero, celebrated game designers and creators of Romero Games, have imparted their perspectives on the present condition of the gaming industry amid significant reductions at their Galway-based studio.

In a discussion with Gamesindustry.biz before the Dark and Doomy event in Wakefield last week, Brenda Romero stated, “I feel as though the industry is in a truly terrible situation. We experienced the crash in the 80s, and this definitely feels crashier. There are very few individuals untouched, or their partners are affected, or they are anxious about potential effects. It’s an extremely challenging time currently.”

The early 1980s witnessed a dramatic decline in the American games industry, due to an oversupply of low-grade games across numerous platforms, alongside a waning interest in consoles as personal computers became more popular. This challenging era eventually improved with the introduction of the NES.

John Romero pointed out Battlefield 6 as a reflection of the industry’s troubling condition, sharing his bewilderment with Gamesindustry: “I can’t comprehend what that’s all about.” He mentioned the impressive sales figures for the recent EA shooter and the job cuts that followed this significant achievement.

The Romeros’ studio, which is still functioning, lost its financial backing due to Microsoft’s extensive budget cuts last year. Nevertheless, the studio was able to persevere, and their in-progress shooter was rescued (although drastically redesigned). The team has shrunk from around 110 individuals to merely nine developers following a prolonged redundancy process.
